'Ol Gabe here, #925. Hope you'll get as good a response on this CasCity poll as I did when it ran on TFS. That data was collated, posted then purged after a copy was sent to L.G., if I recall correctly, its been about a year or so.
Looks like TFS may possibly arise from the ashes as El Cajon teases us with his reports every so often, either way, NCOWS has an outstanding forum here to present and discuss ideas and concepts and we are most certainly lucky to have it and are blessed in that logic.
Best regards and good polling!

I just sent in my and my wife's dues, too. I'm excited about being a part of this org.! Now, I just hope a group will start up here in Arizona. We've got a lot of natural authenticity here.

Doc, I guess that makes you our primary recruiter in Arizona.
That is how several of our new posses got started. One person became interested and recruited others.
Welcome aboard and lots of luck.

Many thanks, Will! I'm surprised there aren't any posses here. This place is buried in western history of all types and all peoples. NCOWS seems like a natural. Well, as soon as my membership packet arrives I'll start recruiting....

Maybe we could start a posse halfway between us, somewhere in New Mexico. :D

I've been a member for about 5 years. I attended a military course at Camp Dodge, IA and my instructor was an NCOWS member. He is the one that started me down the CAS road (to my wife's chagrin). I joined because I enjoy the historical Old West. I live in the Tulsa, Oklahoma area where there isn't a local NCOWS posse and I haven't organized one yet. I went to the Convention in 2001 when it was in Waterloo, IA. That is the only NCOWS event I have ever attended. I always intended to go to the National Shoot and other events but something always came up--usually military training or deployment. Thats about it.

Mr Ketchum,
Yes, the same. I am looking forward to coming out to see you and all the fellows at a shoot this Fall if possible, though more likely next Spring as my schedule does not currently allow it.
I have a good feeling about getting NCOWS activities going with Mr Hunt in Michigan over the Winter and see what we can do to support authenticity as much as we can (and have fun shooting to boot).
Thanks for the e-mail, looking forward to more and more importantly to seeing the strings on this NCOWS e-list. Jim told me about it awhile ago in an e-mail and I have finally checked it out. Good stuff. I do not get on line as much as I would like but I will check this site as often as possible.
Bye for now Mr. Ketchum - is is nice to meet you.

Glad you pards are here.
Welcome, Mr. M.R.!
Well, it is official now! NCOWS member #3016. I have learned sooo much already, almost everything I thought I knew about the era has been thrown out the window.
I never would have imagined I would strive to be P.C.! ;) (Period correct, I will never be Politically Correct)
I have already chatted with a lot of ya'all, look forward to seeing you in person.
WJ,
Proud to have you as a pard! Welcome to the fire. Ya still have time to register for the Convention which is in two weeks here in Kansas City. The registration form is available on the NCOWS web site. You can do a lot of shopping for clothes, guns and other CAS related items all in one place! :o ;D Hope you can make it!!
Welcome to camp, Whiskey.
(And I know we're all hopin' that you didn't get that nickname by accident!) ;D
In any case, glad to have you with the NCOWS outfit.
First round's on us, but after that... well... they do call you "whiskey" don't they?
It wouldnt be a proper PC campfire without good friends and a little whiskey, would it? I am sure it is a long standing tradition that the new guy buys! ;)
As long as your'e offerin' jt
Well, Lord knows we've got the good friends part ........... ;)
Dear Pards,
The check is in the mail! I finally remembered to write a check to renew my membership and stuff it in an envelope.
Still can't find my favorite sweater, though... or remember what I did with the toenail clippers... dang this getting old stuff, anyway... ::)
;D ;D ;D
Seriously, though, glad you re-upped. Good to see you here again.
Got curious, so did a survey. On Cas-City there are 137 members registered as NCOWS. Most have less than 10 posts. What does that mean? I don't know. (Was more than I thought)

Trap, without getting into any psychological reasons, :o perhaps some of us are just over-achievers.
Or we like to "yak" with our friends! ::)

Well, being a new guy I have to "chime in" on this one! I may be saying something that is common knowledge, but here goes!
It is SOOOOOO easy to have something taken out of context on the internet. I am sure that other new NCOWS members as I am are REALLY interested in this and dont want to risk making someone mad; so we just "lurk" for awhile.
NOONE likes asking a stupid question. Usually you realize it about 1 min. AFTER you post.
I think anyone interested in NCOWS actually LIKES doing research / figuring things out for themselves. The nature of the organization requires a little more dedication.
Most "boards" arent as friendly as this one. I know I am not as cautious about posting now. (you may regret this! ;) )
Whiskey:
You're probably right about new enlistees kinda wanting to get the "lay of the land" so to speak before jumping in. That's probably just human nature. And things CAN easily be misinterpreted on the boards.
Still, there's no reason for our pards to be shy.
1) We've ALL asked stupid questions at one time or another. Hell, some of us still do from time to time, so that shouldn't stop anybody.
2) This IS a friendly board. Now that's not to say that we can't have our disagreements or differences of opinion. But the main thing is that we all try very hard to keep things civil. Only when it gets to name-callin', general disrespect and other rude behavior does it become a problem. Thankfully that's pretty rare on this board.
3) I agree that many NCOWS members enjoy the research and the history that goes into our outfits and our "fun." We know that don't appeal to everyone, but that's OK. We're happy to be who we are and to be able to share our philosophy with our like-minded NCOWS pards.
Whiskey, I ask those stupid questions just so I don't make them dumb mistakes. Still do make them every now and then. I sure hope you like Old Overholt rye whiskey. It's my favorite. Was also John Henry Holiday's favorite. See you down the trail and ask you in person one of these days. TJ
I'm married - asking stupid questions is sort of unavoidable for me (http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m274/Darkfold_2006/Emoticons/surrender.gif)

NCOWS 3049 - Brand new, haven't even thought of an alias yet. (Poker Jack is my SASS alias)
Welcome to NCOWS, Jack. Mighty glad to have you here. Pull up a chair.
And heck, we'll call you whatever you like -- we ain't particular in that regard. ;)
What neck o' the woods you hail from?
Howdy, Jack! And Welcome!!!
As you may know, NCOWS doesn't require an alias.
As a fine point, I don't have an alias - I have a nickname (or 2 ;) ) To me, an "alias" implies that you're trying to hide something. :o ::) :D
That's not always true of course, but ...
However, Steel Horse Bailey is how I'm registered in SASS and NCOWS. It's simpler that way. You might be surprised how many NCOWS members actually use a variation of their given name. Irish Dave, Deadeye Don, River City John, Dr. Bob, and the list goes on. Poker Jack, perhaps, too?
Thanks for the welcome.
I live in Alabama, Irish Dave.
Howdy PJ,
I lazy and use initials a lot! ;) ;D Welcome to NCOWS. We are right proud to have you at the campfire! Don't hesitate to ask questions. We, as a group know a lot, and have a LOT of opinions too! ;D [That last qualifies as an understatement! :o ::) :o ;D ]
That's great Jack.
Glad to see another member from the great state of Alabama.
Poker Jack, welcome. Alabama uh. I lived there for 11 years. Up in North AL a little place called Town Creek. Good to have you. TJ (Texas Jack)

I've enjoyed your contributions elsewhere in CAS City.
Welcome to NCOWS, and the NCOWS Forum.
RCJ
p.s. Joss was the ramrod behind our first CA NCOWS Posse. Due to shifts in members, etc. it was not able to sustain itself. The Hat Creek Regulators had one of the most unique operations in NCOWS, - their events were all hosted on state lands and were conceived as "living history" encampments.
Seeing as we have new members increase within many areas, we have the potential to see a CA posse again soon.
So Joss is very experienced in making an NCOWS posse work.
Howdy All :D
Thanks for the welcome, I know I am going to enjoy being a member, Ive had conversations with a lot of you on different forums here in Cas City over the past years, and have gained a wealth of information from all of you, and it's much appreciated, and I've also enjoyed sharing the tid bits that I know, so I really look forward to a brand new year in NCOWS, I have an old copy of the Shootest Magazine, I really enjoyed reading, now I can look forward to getting this magazine regularly.

SHB, I am sorry that you were not in attendance at the Convention. I hung out with Bill and Dave most of the time at the Concention center and watched their table as well as Dr. Bob's table some too.
I was dressed in Street clothes and was fighting a combo Head/chest cold. I was only there on Saturday morning. Wanted to see some of the talks, but I was running low on cough drops and didn't want to have a loud coughing fit. I wasn't trying to be sneaky, as I did talk to Dr. Bob and Texas Lawdawg, but was definitely trying to limit exposing anyone to my cold. It was a great time.

Thanks for the welcome. I'm actually in Columbia, SC, previously from western NY, but have done a fair amount of canoeing and camping in the swamp. I've been doing CAS for about 9 months and shoot with a local SASS affiliated posse. I just discovered NCOWS, and this is really up my alley. I'll have much to do to achieve historical accuracy, but for me this will be great fun. Are there any NCOWS folks in SC? I'd love to form a posse.

Now, we just need to get these folks signed up for the NCOWS Chambers.
Dave,
And what does "NCOWS Chambers" consist of?
I haven't been an active/participating member of NCOWS since Sept. 2004. I may be a bit out of the loop on what this actually is.
Much of this site is new to me. I am still trying to find my way around and see what it has to offer.
I have preformed a search, and only came up with this posting.
The Marshal or Marshal-ette will add you to the "Chambers" soon. It's a board for members only.
Blair:
Dr. Bob is correct. It's a "child board" of this one that is only accessible to NCOWS members. Marshal Halloway and/or his lovely wife (The Marshal'ette) check here regularly and will open that access for you.
Thank you both, for your replys.
I will check in often now that I am back online.
But, what exactly is it? And what does it mean?

Blair, a few years ago when we were discussing NCOWS topics where we might have some heated disagreement it was felt that we should be able to do so without non-members reading it or actually commenting. I asked Marshal Halloway if such a board was possible and he set it up for us. On this child board we don't only discuss NCOWS business but we have many of the same discussions that we do on the open forum but can kind of let our hair down without running off prospective members. It has been quite a while since we have had much in the way of heated disagreements. The closest being the use of the the Krag rifle in the recent NCOWS National Shoot's long range side match. It is a place where if we can't even agree to disagree we don't have to do so in public.
I hope that explains it for you. You will have access soon.

Hi all,
Checking back in.
Seems my password got lost in the shuffle yesterday. Those "Aces", they are always slipping out of the deck!
Thanks for a heads up from Major 2 to Marshal Halloway, I got reregistered and NCOWS Chambers all at the same time.
Thanks guys!
Wait till you get my BILL ! ;D
I was told to post in this thread that I am online and want access to the NCOWS member only forum. Contact me if you have any questions.
Thank you.

Welcome to the NCOWS forum. Marshal H. will add you to the members board soon!
RickB,
You had access the same day you signed in.
For the record: All forum registered NCOWS member should see the child board when they access the NCOWS board index page. The child board is listed at the top and looks like this:
A direct link to the chamber: http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php/board,62.0.html
If you don't see it, it means we have not yet updated the member list. We try to update the same day a new member register on this thread, but if we're on the road, it can take up to 5 days.
Enjoy!
Thank you very much. I'll check to see if that symbol is on my page.
I look forward to all the NCOWS only discussions. I'm not too into SASS because I love the authenticity of NCOWS guns and gear. I've got some SASS friends who keep trying to bring me over to SASS but so far I don't have as much NCOWS time as I would like. Life has a way of passing by quickly and when it does it seems not to give you time for the things you wish to do the most.
Thanks gents.
Rick.

After lurking on the NCOWS and historical forums and checking the back pages, I couldn't put it off any longer and I joined today. I finished up my MA at the University of Idaho this past spring, so I have a love of all things history, but particularly western and military. I'm working on a couple of personas as well, and have some components put together. Late 1880's (Probably 1888-9) cowboy, born in Arkansas. I'm also working on US Army officer (already a member of the GAF), and toying with the idea of Texas Ranger. My era will probably be moved around a bit too, I was lacking a shotgun aside from borrowing my dad's hammerless s x s, and I happened to pick up a 1887 lever at Cabela's for a steal on Tuesday, so that's the limiting factor on that for right now. I'd love to pick up a 26 inch hammer double from Cimarron, and that'd move me back a few years. I've got a Uberti 1873, 1876, and a pair of Schofields (with 1875 Remingtons as backups) as well as that shotgun as my main go to guns for SASS. I've picked up "I See by Your Outfit," "Cowboys & Trappings of the Old West," "Packing Iron," "The Texas Rangers: Wearing the Cinco Peso, 1821-1900," and "Indian War Veterans: Memories of Army Life and Campaigns in the West, 1864-1898," just to name a few. Always best to get it right the first time rather than spending money to fix mistakes! It's the geek in me but I love research, what can I say. I'll be sure to post pictures of my progress and kit, and I aspire to the 'Master Level' from Marlan Ingram's articles. Overall it's been a lot of fun so far, and I haven't even been a member. I look forward to diving in, attending matches, and meeting new friends!
Regards,
Peachey
P.C. Glad to have you here. Even better that you've got the right approach to old west historical recreation from an historical perspective. Keep on keeping on with the research in all of your endeavors, such will only set you up for success. I hope you're keen to consider making your own clothing and equipment based on your research. If you ever have a question about that sort of thing please PM me.
Again, welcome aboard and I'm looking forward to your contributions, thoughts, and whatever research & documentation you care to share. It's good for all of us.

Seriously, you've gotten in with some great folks. Hopefully you'll be able to come to the National Shoot in Evansville - it may be the last time there in a while, 'cause they've hosted it the last few years and some other places more west of the Big Missississississippi might want to have the shoot in a place closer to them.

Nowhere near Wall, but I have been through there a few times. Interesting place.
OK, I was just curious. My wife's from Wall. I got my first gun (an 1858 Remington NMA) at the World Famous Wall Drug Store. I owe Wall S.D. alot because it's been the source of some of the best things in my life.

Give me a holler if you are from the Eastern Iowa, Western Illinois, Northeast Missouri, Southeast Wisconsin and Southeast Minnesota area and are looking to jine up with a new NCOWS Posse as there is a movement afoot to get a new one going in the Quad Cities area if it all works out, of course other ranges in the same locales will work if you have some ground ready to go, just get in touch and we'll hash it all out!

Wadd, Darby, Jess, & Judge - Welcome to ya! Glad to see ya made it to this side of the range. The coffee's hot, the tales are good, and the company is grand.
Steel Hore Bailey,
Why thank you ... I am learning as I go on ... actually, my Great Grandfather Wadd Watson Ellis WAS a member of the Cracker Cow Cavalry in the final years of the war ... funny how time travels in circles
P.S. ... this is for Steel Horse Bailey ... I see you on BROW all the time ... so I have a question ... I am really enamoured (and that is the right word ... LOL) on the John Bodine .45-70 Remington reproduction rolling block, with it's double triggers.
My question is, would this gun be considered verboten by NCOWS because of the double triggers? Although I really want the double triggers, would I be able to shoot it at an NCOWS sponsored shoot
Or would I be wiser to look for a Pedersoli that has all the bells and whistles EXCEPT a double trigger setup?
Steel Hore, eh? Great! That's one version I HADN'T thought of or heard! ;D
Great of you to join us (apparently AGAIN!)
As far as I know, the double trigger set-up is fine. About every good rifle of that era could be had with single or double triggers. Matter of fact, about the only thing - triggerwise - that wasn't very authentic (and I'm certainly NOT the final word on that) is the single set trigger like the newer Russian "Remington" double-barreled shotguns have. The Judge would be the one to check with for clarity, but I'm thinking the John Bodine model as sold is fine for long-range NCOWS competition.
Have fun - and that's all the bells & whistles needed!

'Ol Gabe here, not the one posted above but the geneologically-correct GAF 'Old Fart' formerly from Le Grand Station, Iowa Territory.
Glad to see a familiar name here, I had the pleasure of meeting and seeing LastCigar participate in a GAF event at Ackley, IA many years ago and know he is a stalwart and upstanding historically accurate Fellow of the First Water and should become a Senator as soon as is possible due to his overwhelming knowledge of our era. Please, Kind Sir, consider it soon!
Also glad to see Civil War Jack's picture and history on our website pursuant to his throwing his hat into the upcoming NCOWS org election, and FWIW C.W.J., I like your style and you have my vote!
Now regarding Gabe, one of these days we'll touch base at a convention or somesuch and have to get our picture taken side-by-side as nobody else will probably believe who is the younger of the two, HAH!

Cap'n John: by "chiming in" here someone will verify your membership and "unlock" the other site: The NCOWS Chambers and you'll magically be able to see what's been hiding from your confuser.
You didn't realize it at the time, but I got you the password and secret handshake at the WSSC. It was SOOO secret you still don't know it.

Kinchafoonee Kid! New member as a of a couple of months ago number 3472 (aka Matt Harris 21st century alias). Look forward to participating, although I live in Colorado with no nearby posse. I intend to build an Originals class persona based partly on my GG grandfather, who fought in the 12 th Georgia Infantry during the War Between the States. My persona will be a Deputy U.S. Marshal circa 1888 who is struggling to make sense of the changing world around him. Currently, I shoot in SASS matches with the Colorado Shaketails and one day want to participate in NCOWS. I have two US Firarms SAA in .45 and an Uberti Winchster 73 in .44WCF.
I invite any advice and look forward to corresponding with all.

Harley,
Yes, a long time.
Are you back in NCOWS Territory?
Blair
Blair
indeed. I took a trip through Civil War, well, actually, the Minnesota Civil War (Great Sioux Uprising of 1862). Now, my wife is having some serious health issues and so, we are looking at the shooting sport as a little easier to accomplish. so, yeah, I am coming back slowly but surely.
Harley,
I have retired, but much has transpired during that time.
I will be happy to share what I can, if you are interested. E-mail me at btaylor18 at cfl.rr.com if you would like to know more?
Good to hear from you,

Thanks for the welcome back, NCOWS is the only way to go. About as close to the old west as any of us are apt to get. I have been rolling my own and shooting old west firearms for 40 years but am still learning after reading on this site. The Shootist is just as good as ever. Wish I would have known about this site years ago, it is best I have seen. They say you should never look back, but I wished I had never strayed.
Glad to be back, and Thanks to all

Ah yes, I understand the feeling well. Unfortunately in my case the daughter was mine as well so any suggestions of me getting out of the way were severely frowned upon. Fortunately, however; our daughter's marriage was in July and my wife has since returned; replacing the crazy lady I had been living with for several months.

"Wild Ben" Van Dorn, #3783. Part-time cowhand, part-time saddle-tramp, full-time biped of pandemonium and frequently seen in the company of the no-good card sharp Blackjack Charlie!
Been out of the hobby for about the last fifteen years, and it's nice to get back! When I originally shot, it was SASS, and after moving back from California and learning about NCOWS, I had to dig out my duds and saddle up again! I'm a lifetime shooter and member of the Dark Side (it started with flintlocks), and a dyed-in-the-wool warthog. I also produce historically-themed shooting videos and promos, when Blackjack Charlie isn't trying to bushwhack me.
Hope to meet some folks on here in March. I'll be the tall feller wearing a camera; don't be shy!

I'm in San Antonio most of the time so the Berger Sharpshooters is a pretty good trek, and I shoot every weekend down here, but I will try to make it up there to a shoot before long. Sedalia Dave gave me a lot of good info on the club and what to expect.
Is the Shootist still in print form? I got some from Dennis Kavanaugh 20 years ago when he was working at Tin Star Ranch, and have picked up a few from Mike Harvey's office at Cimarron, always liked it.
It is and the current copy in mailing now some have already received their copies.

Talk about a day late and a dollar short. I gave up CAS back in 1995 because SASS was getting just silly in my area. I was more of a history buff and didn't feel like I fit in. Never heard of NCOWS back then or I might have stayed involved. Water under the bridge and now the bridge has been torn down. LOL
Just joined NCOWS as a Senior (#3987) to support the idea even though I don't (can't) shoot in matches anymore. I like the idea of the organization and want to lend my financial support in addition to just saying I'm on your side. Glad to finally be one of you, even if in name only.

Hey, Travis and Annie Herod, Iron City Sage #4063, and hers is 4064. Started briefly with SASS but I think this might be more to my liking, I like not all the targets are 8 feet away.....great people at both, but I enjoyed the shooting at my first NCOWS shoot last month better!
Been around the corral a while, #C31
