Title: First time loading and firing Holy Black!
Post by: Tornado on February 22, 2014, 08:52:01 PM
Well after much lurking and research I made my first rounds a few weeks ago and I was able to touch them off this afternoon.  I used my Pietta Remington NMA w/ Kirst Conversion Cylinder chambered in 45 Colt.  I loaded some Big Lube 170g bullets over varying loads of Goex FFFg and grits, ranging from 18g of FFF to as much as would fit in the case.  Full power was the most fun!  I was able to let several friends and family experience the Holy Black for the first time today as well.  My brother took this slow motion video with his phone:

I loaded up a few 250g w/ a full load of FFF for my Rossi 92 also.
Thanks for help!

Nice!  I've just started reloading for my .45 Colt, and haven't tried loading my own BP rounds yet, merely sticking to factory BP stuff I bought a few years ago.  Glad to see you're having success with your loads.  Gotta love the smell of black power in the air! 8)

Welcome to the Darkside Tornado!

You've just discovered the way to the most fun you can have with your cloths on.  Enjoy the good company.  Their remarks may smell like gunsmoke, but that's because they love the Holy Black so well.

The very best to you.

Tornado;  Welcome to the realm of the true gunpowder. (Before smokeless, it was simply called gunpowder.)

Loading pistol & rifle loads with gunpowder requires a different approach than with smokeless. Pour enough powder in the case so that the bullet slightly compresses the powder at the proper overall length.  Bullets should carry a suitable lube such as SPG, but there are others and many home recipes.  This is the simple version so go through this board and The Dark Arts.

Shotgun ammo is also a bit different. As BP is bulkier than smokeless the wads have to be shorter to allow powder space.  While a shorter plastic field load wad can be used, the traditional built-up wad column is common.  Card and cushion wads can be found at CIRCLE FLY;  http://www.circlefly.com/html/welcome.html

Welcome to the dark side, and it seems you are at a place that it took me years to surpass.  With the knowledge to be found here, you will soon be an expert.

Howdy

I guess I'm just a stick in the mud. I wish folks would stop referring to Black Powder as 'the Holy Black' and other similar names. It is Black Powder. There is nothing 'holy' about it. Yes, it requires different loading techniques than Smokeless, and it is certainly different to shoot than Smokeless, but there is nothing 'holy' about it.

I think the term "Holy Black" came about when a noob first fired a BP .45 Colt round and said - "Holy Smoke!"

This pepper-out-of-fly sh!t minutiae is like the ".45 LONG Colt" nit picking. Who cares? We're all playing a game here and the guys we're venerating were by and large a bunch of semi-illiterates, if that.

Yeah, it is not as if cowboys had a varied and interesting vernacular that accomodated many different euphemisms for common objects you guys.

;)

Peace my brother
