I would appreciate any information regarding a Spencer Rifle with a serial number of 8340.

Thanks in advance!

Alias should be Spencer49 ::) ::),

Checked on your Spencer Rifle serial #8340.  My SRS books show a Spencer Rifle serial # 8339 issued to a member of Company G, 8th Indiana Volunteer Cavalry and a Spencer Rifle serial # 8354 issued to the same unit. No day, month or year is given for the issue.

There were quite a few Spencer Rifles in your serial # range issued to the same unit, so I think your Spencer Rifle may have been issued to the same unit.  Remember this is just a "guestimate" on my part, but a very good one, nonetheless ;D
