The 2012 Convention will be March 16-18, 2012 at the Paroquet Springs Conference Center in Shepherdsville, Kentucky. This is a great new central location and very nice modern facility right off of I-65 with lots of free parking and close to hotels, restaurants and shopping.
Here are a couple of pictures of the place from a knife show that I attened at Paroquet springs.

Shepherdsville is only 20 miles south of downtown Louisville, KY and by going through Louisville, there is Interstate access from every direction. I-65 from the north and south, I-71 from the north, I-64 from the east and west, and I-75 from the south via Lexington, KY (80 miles east of Louisville). Louisville is served by Louisville International Airport (SDF) which is also located right next to I-65.
The conference center is within sight of I-65 at exit 117.

The NCOWS offical rate is at the Sleep Inn that's at exit 117

I made my reservations at the Sleep Inn ( as did several I know ) are good ? or are we driving each day ?
Sleep Inn and COUNTRY INN are beside the convention center. When I typed it in on my iPhone it "corrected" it to Comfort Inn and I didn't catch it. As I drove by this morning each is less than 100 yards door to door with the center. I posted the link to further confuse folks... ;D

And if anyone has extra time, the great Patton Museum, located at Ft. Knox is about 30-40 minutes away from Shepherdsville. You can see Patton's famous Peacemaker and the 357 he carried, both with Ivory grips (he wasn't a New Orleans pimp, after all) is on display in the inside portion of the museum. There are a lot of captured Axis vehicles (some with battle damage) that he had "rounded up" and brought back to the States to go on display. They are pretty much the ultimate in War Trophies. If I remember, the car he was in when they had the accident that killed him (reportedly, 'tho there is some controversy to the conspiracy believers whether it was truly an "accident") is repaired and on display.
I was stationed at Ft. Knox for 5 1/2 years and have spent a LOT of hours browsing there. It's worth a visit ... and you can see the Gold Vault, too. It's visible from 31W, the main highway that goes past the property. (But no gold.)

Jeff
I been there a couple of time, but I'm up for day trip ...and we have history of going to Museums ;) right !
Bowiemaker, Longarm tells me he will be there three days with a table for his gunsmithing. Homer Brown talked him into it. See you there. Tj
The Frazier International History Museum about 20 miles north in Louisville is another great side trip.
They have an incredible collection of antique and historic weapons including:
• The ceremonial sword of Founding Father Josiah Bartlett
• The family bible of the legendary pioneer Daniel Boone
• The original "Big Stick" of President Theodore Roosevelt
• The bow attributed to the great Apache leader Geronimo
• The ivory-handled Colt pistols of General George Armstrong Custer
The Frazier Museum has the distinction of being the only place in the world outside Great Britain to permanently house and display Royal Armouries artifacts.
October 15, 2011 through April 8, 2012 they have a special exhibition "Civil War: My Brother, My Enemy" which tells of many Kentucky families whose loyalties were split between north and south during the Civil War.
Since the Johnson County Rangers are hosting the 2012 Convention, you can find all of the latest convention information and details information on our web page http://www.jcrangers.com/2012convention.htm (http://www.jcrangers.com/2012convention.htm)
There are also maps, directions, lodging information, links to area attractions, member and vendor applications, seminar and vendor lists, schedule and more.
Also do not forget KNOB CREEK Gun range!! Home of the famous KNOB CREEK Machine gun show is about a 20 minute drive straight out the same road. Celeste

Bowiemaker,
Please be sure that any Convention information gets sent to Dutch Limbaugh as well so the NCOWS website has all the information that the JCR site has. Any non-CasCity members will be looking there first.
Thanks for the hard work!

This is also a Civil War earthwork fort, Ft. Duffield, in West Point, KY. It is just West of Knob Creek on the Salt River.
Yuma,

Well, Rats! I had heard that the Armor Center was moving to Ft. Benning (if I remember correctly) but I sure didn't realize that the Museum would move, too.
I don't wish to get into the "politics" of the move; I can see the need for combining training between ALL the branches for modern warfare, but it sure is a shame! It sure doesn't help Kentucky economy!
Another tradition shattered for reasons of "expediency!"
Damn!!!

Jeff the "light mafia" is in charge of the Army at this time. They built a new museum just off post at the Army Manuever Center (Fort Benning) but I have not been to it. I go thru Columbus on the way to my son's house but dont stop as I dont have any pleasant memories of Benning.

Can we wear our handguns at the Convention?? CC
Most likely. I have attended 2 Conventions and at both, they had an NCOWS member "inspector" who verified that all guns were unloaded and safe. I think they used the plastic tie thingy like at most gunshows. Then, the revolvers (I don't remember ANY rifles or shotguns carried) went into the holster and the plastic didn't show.
See ya there!
Ky is open carry state but we need to handle it like most gun shows and shoots and have all weapons cold since it is a show after all and people might be wanting to look at the guns.
Also for anyone looking for something else to do while in this area, the Frazier arms museum in Louisville has a civil war exhibit going on now. If I remember right it is called "Civil War: My brother, my enemy" and from what I understand covers a lot of the impact on Kentucky with divided families and friends over the war.
I haven't seen the exhibit yet but I know Mr. Fraziers son in law and have also read an article on the exhibit. I understand it is supposed to be a 3800 sq. ft. exhibit and features over 100 artifacts including flags, letters, rare uniforms, photos, etc. There is also a Mary Todd Lincoln collection there, she was originally from Lexington Kentucky and had relatives fighting for the confederacy.
To my understanding the exhibit goes through the first part of April.
I think this is really shaping up to be a great convention. This will be my first conventon so I can't really compare it previous years but we do have 17 confirmed vendors already signed up. We will have several very interesting seminars and presentations. I am going to be set up to take studio photos. We have generated a lot of public interest by promoting the convention at local gun shows and several interested parties have told me that they will be coming. We have a great banquet in the works. We will have a drawing for a fantastic pistol package. It sounds like it is going to be a real blast. I hope everyone can make it!
Great job, BowieMan and the JCR and all other helpers, vendors, & presenters!
Thanks ahead of time!
I made reservations at the moptel and am sending in application, it's a long drive from Iowa but it sounds like it will be well worth
it. Will there be a Friday night hospitality room /potluck like in the past?
Bear Tooth Billy, glad to hear you will be heading this way. If anyone wants to volunteer their motel room for the hospitality room, they would be welcome to do that. We can't do that at the Convention Center. See you in March. JIM
Anyone know if the Convention Center has WiFi?

Dutch, your post made me drool on some paperwork and also made my cholesterol go up 20 points. If we ever get a convention down this way, there's a place across the lake from me called "The Flying Saucer". 200 different beers and the best dang plate of chili cheese fries with about a pound of BACON bits sprinkled on the top.
Jeff checked with the motel today and they have a meeting room and the breakfast area that could be used for a get together on Friday night. There are 10 rooms left in our block for the Convention. If you haven't made those reservations, don't wait too long. JIM

Put Kay Ray and Becky Beechler down as attending the Tea as well. We will be coming up from Texas. The last 2 years the Convention Committee has solicited donations to pay for the Tea rather than increase the convention registration fee or charge the ladies. Is your intent to do the same?

I have updated all the convention information I have and added a lot information on the JCR/NCOWS Convention web page at http://www.jcrangers.com/2012convention.htm (http://www.jcrangers.com/2012convention.htm). You will find directions, vendors, seminars, lots of general information, accomodations, dining, area attractions, and gun laws and regulations.
We have a table this weekend at one of the biggest gun shows to promote the convention and NCOWS. There is a lot of interest in this area and surrounding states. The response has been great. This will be a great opportunity to introduce NCOWS to a lot of newcomers.
ONLY 19 DAYS UNTIL WE SADDLE UP!
We had a display table at the National Gun Day Show in Louisville, KY this past weeked to promote NCOWS and the National Convention. This is a 2000 table gun show that draws people from several states. JD Goodguy, Ima Shureshot, Bushwahcker, One Eye Floozy, JW McCandles and Sierra Sue volunteered to man the table.
We had a HUGE crowd at the show on Saturday. Sunday was slower but still a lot of traffic. Once again we saw a lot of interest in NCOWS. Many said they would come to the convention.
We signed up two new NCOWS members and one new convention vendor (dealing in Colts).
Thanks to everyone who helped out.

We welcome all visitors to our convention. I'm an old cowhand from the Texas Panhandle and I'll talk horses with you.
Thanks guys! I appreciate the replies. Looking forward to stopping by. :)
How has the weather situation around there affected the Convention, if at all? Not excited about future forecast of snow for the area either. You folks sure don't need that now.
Typical Kentucky weather, nothing new around here.
Sunny here at Hartford, KY. but the wind has a chill. Tj
There weather could be just about anything in the Ohio Valley. It was 70 degrees a couple of days ago and snow is preidicted for tonight.
I want that snow to be gone by the 15th of March when I get to Louisville. I don't like snow. I am spoiled, living here in the D/FW area, we just don't have that much snow. I had all the snow I wanted to see, growing up in the Texas Panhandle. We had a blizzard in 57 where we had snow drifts over 8 feet tall. The blizzard in 64 was a little milder, we only had 6 ft. drifts.
Snow is unlikely around here in mid-March but it has happened. So far, we are having a very mild winter this year. Snow has barely covered the ground only twice and it was gone in a day.
NCOWS CONVENTION 2012
We have been informed that we will not be allowed to help set up tables at the Convention due to insurance concerns. Bob Chenault will present a floorplan for the tables and the Center workers will do the setting. We can help vendors set up their wares.
If anyone wants to bring some music for the Banquet Saturday night, please let us know, otherwise there will not be a band or entertainment. There will be a cash bar at the Banquet, no brown bagging will be allowed.
Daily entry fee for walk-ins will be $5 per person, under 12 free.
The Convention will open at 12:00 noon on Friday. The Honor Guard can conduct their opening immediately after that. Show will close at 5:00 pm. The Posse Caucus will be at 6:30 with the Congress beginning at 7:00.
Saturday will begin at 9:00 am and end at 5:00 pm. The Banquet will be from 6:30 to 10:00 pm.

Books
Work-N-Ranch had to cancel due to a death in the family.
Books, I have heard that Jim Downing can not attend. Tj
Its a shame we won't be having a band or Ball Dance as we had gotten use to in Kansas City. :'(
Sorry about Work-n-Ranch having a death in the family, but I for one will miss them as I was planning on spending lots of money since Kay and I have lost about 90# between the 2 of us.
I hadn't heard of W'n'R before. Thanks to you, Joe, I found their online site. It IS a shame they won't be there! They have good, moderately priced items and more colors (of some items like bandanas) than I've ever seen. I DO wish they'd call bandanas by their proper name, not Wild Rags, which is totally modern.
Nice folks - I'm sorry they won't be able to attend.
I just got off the phone with the scrimshaw artist. He will be at the Convention and will be doing work at his booth throughout the show. John bring the records and you can call out the dances. See you all next week. JIM
Jeff:
I think the Wild Rag comes from the modern day Cowboys/Buccaroos that work up in the Great Basin area (Nevada/Washington/Idaho). The best part of W & R is they have a pretty wide selection of ready made womens clothes and as you said a big selection.
Joe
Music and dance would be great.
I ain't too WILD anymore, so I guess I need to find somewhere that sells TAME RAGS.
Anyone with CD's of time appropriate or anything else you wish to dance to, bring them along. We will have a CD player and the floor will be ready. See you next week. JIM
I forgot to put one additional item on the Convention Agenda. Many of you have met Peevine and Charlie and know what gamesters they are. Immediately after the Ladies Tea on Saturday, we will be holding the PEEVINE AND CHARLIE INVITATIONAL POKER TOURNAMENT. Each entrant will pay $10 for one hundred dollars worth of chips. At the end of the designated time, the one with the most chips will be declared the winner. They will be given a trophy and the money will go to NCOWS. See you there. JIM

Can we carry dummy rounds in our gunbelt?

Can we carry dummy rounds in our gunbelt?
It would be better if you did not.
But I'm NOT the final judge of this kind of thing ...
I wouldn't think that it would not be a problem as long as you don't leave the Convention premises.
How would one be able to tell a dummy round from a live round?
I guess we could weigh them.
My personal opinion: We are going to have a lot of guns being handled, shown around, traded, and admired. We are going to be open to the public. I prefer NO chance of a live round ending up in one of those guns on the convention floor. I would prefer not to have cartidge belts loaded even with dummy rounds. I know we all like the look but eliminate the chance that a live one got mixed into the bunch.
I almost always have rounds (usually dummy ones that I have the primers marked on) in belts and nobody has ever said anything at gun shows. I've seen many others do it too. They usually ask no loose ammo but not sure that means a belt since no one seems to care. I guess they pretty much figure it's common sense, if someone was wanting to do something bad they could pull a cartridge from a pocket or out of a box of ammo just as easy. It's usually not the things you can see that you worry about.
Guns are checked and zip tied at the door to assure no one accidentally has one loaded and all vendors are required to check and tie their guns. No one is to stick a cartridge in a gun whether it's a dummy round or not.
You can also make dummy rounds by seating a bullet in a spent case without knocking out the spent primer or just leave out the primer. This way it's pretty obvious it's not live upon inspection.
Once you leave the convention? Kentucky is open carry state, once you leave the show you could load up as far as the law is concerned. I've heard of it but I have never once had anyone say anything about me open carrying a weapon. You don't see it as much as you used too though, before concealed carry laws open carry was the only way we could carry legal in Kentucky. Plus the area I live in is not as rural as it once was :( You always take the risk of a soccer mom freaking out :o
Looks like the weather is going to be in the low 70's most of this week and next weekend.
It just keeps getting better. Tj :D
Then I'll put some primer-less rounds in my belt. If it's a problem, I'll remove them.
I don't know if all rooms are taken, but if anyone needs a room contact me by tomorrow noon. jt
I might keep one live round in my pocket just in case Cliff tries to hold me up on a new holster I'm going to order.... CC ;D ;D
As Cliff has posted there are several ways of making it obvious that rounds are dummies. It shouldn't be a problem to tell.
NCOWS Bylaws also require that NO LIVE ROUNDS be anywhere on the person at any re-enactment event. While the Convention may not technically be a re-enactmnent in the traditional sense, the rule on live ammo certainly applies.
We all want and need safety to be first and foremost, but with proper procedures in place, this issue shouldn't present a problem.

I actually keep dummy rounds in my gun belt and mine have no primers at all in them.
Irish Dave and Cliff: My post about having a live round in my pocket was a joke.. ;D I know better than that..CC
Yeah well I'm going to have a drum stove door stuck inside my vest just in case you were serious. :D
;D
Bro. SHB, I can see that there is no discord involved. Keep on Smilin'!
It's not long now. See y'all there!Celeste
Just minutes now till .... Capt John, Dakota Ike and myself hit the north road
We should be in Conventionville well before dark ...but keep a light on.
see y'all later ! :D
Safe travel too all! Wish I cold go with the florida group but guess I'll settle on representing Florida at the National Shoot in June.
I left D/W about noon today and arrived at Louisville Airport about 2 hours later. Bushwacker picked me up at the airport and drove me out the Sleep Inn in Shepardsville. I have settled in my room and have met a few old friends already here. I am anxious to meet new ones. I look forward to spending 3 days here in beautiful Ky.
Best of luck and safe travel to ALL coming to the Corn-venshun.
See ya Saturday! Me & Dave might be there. Well, 99% I'll be there; I'll find out tomorrow if Dave will be with me, but I'm comin', come obama O-damna hell 'er high water!
;D
Jeff, Be good to see you. Do hope Dave comes too. Hieram's Rangers will meet 1pm Saturday. Tj

I was going to ask about that! Thanks, Bro. James!
Made it.... 13 hours 15 minute w/ sand box breaks "several !" ...
and then there was Capt. Johns Detour in Atlanta and headed us to Colombia S.Carolina...
after several "Ummm ! we need to turn around... you're on I-85 East not I-75 West " we were back on track.
In his Defense he's only driven though Atlanta 100 times and that will confuse anybody, and the fact Dakota Ike and I were not paying attention at all ...
A little weather, a touch of hail, some rain..and here we are...arrived @ 5:15 Eastern.
We are about to sit around and sip some spirits in short short with good friends...
Lookin' good! I'm ready fer this!
I had supper last night with Major 2 and the guys from Florida. I didn't get much sleep last night due to the thunderstorms. It's supposed to rain here all weekend. I put a pot on and it is ready to drink.
Lil Jimmy - You had trouble sleeping in a rainstorm? I sleep REALLY well ... unless it's a super-storm, and even those I can sleep well 'thru.
Most would be happier for rain than snow!
We are under way!
Bowiemaker, I guess I have not had the pleasure of meeting you at the Convention. I have been hanging around with Major 2 and the guys from Florida, and Texas Jack Stephens and Rowdy Fulcher.
Well guys I will see you tomorrow morning as we will be there then. Actually working a bit besides doing some shopping so please leave something for us too. ;D
It now looks like I'll be the Lone Ranger from this part of Indy. Bill's leg is causing him big problems, Bart is gonna work, Tony and Dave have "Mom's Health issues." She could use some extra prayers, pards.
But I'll be there! Doesn't it start around 09:00? Anybody staying right THERE at the Conv. Center (or is there no hotel on site)?
Looks like my "No snow" edict to Momma Nature got heard!
::)
;)
See ya in the funny papers!
;D

Prayers for those needed Bailey. Now as for the weather and no snow you can take that to the bank as we have only had 2 days all this winter one of which was nothing really. ;D

If I'm able to attend next year, I will join. Thanks for the invite.
Bowiemaker,
Keep the pix coming. Enjoy looking at them.

I'm very sorry I didn't get to meet Bowiemaker. I was at his table twice but he was away.
:(
I'm sure we SAW each other, but ...
I was honored to meet Mr. Walt Kirst and his sidekick, Jay "Raven" Strite. These guys have forgotten more about these guns than I'll ever know! And wow! That Walker prototype is awesome! I can't wait for the upcoming article in Guns of the Old West magazine about the Walker and the Walker carbine/rifle prototypes!
(Don't take offense, Jay - if I may be so bold ... "Sidekick" is an honoured term in my version of the Olde West, as I'm sure you may have figured out!)
I am sorry that I didn't get to meet everyone. I was away from my table a lot taking pictures, at seminars, and running around seeing the show. It was a busy weekend for me but I had a lot of fun. I did get to meet several people that I only knew from the forums and that was great.
All-in-all I think it was a very sucessful convention. It was my first one so I can't compare but I thought it went very well.
The banquet dinner was great. A lot of really nice door prizes were given away and I especially want to thank everyone who donated. We had several interesting seminars and quite a few vendors with some really neat stuff. The congress meeting apparently went pretty smoothly and they finished before midnight. I wanted to make my donation tot he poker tournament but couldn't get away at the time. They had a pretty good group at the ladies tea.
Just a really good weekend with with great people. I am very happy that the 2013 convention will be here.

Joec, Was good to met you and put a face to the name. You're not going to believe this, but the lady that won the gun at the Eastern Regional won this gun too. She said she needed it to balance herself out. Hope Lisa enjoys boh guns. Tj

I have no doubt someone else won it since my luck is just bad with these raffles. ;D I truly hope she feels balanced now too. ;) Great to meet you too TJ and will try to make at least one of your meets in the season also.
Joec, The way things have worked out this one in March and one in July will be it. Unless I can get someone to hold the fifth Saturday in Sept. As I can not be there for that one. But come any second Saturday as the SASS group let us shoot working cowboy. Tj

I don't own a 22 so will probably skip that meet at JCR and join your group for that if I can't make it for the other two meets.

Maybe next year.

Actually Will I got there just in time to go to work taking admission at 10 AM to 1 PM. I had to pick up a holster that Cliff made for me as well as a complete reloading setup including two presses I got from another memeber of JCR. I did walk around and look at all of the booths only buying a grip for one of my guns and was gone by 3 PM. My wife kept my spending on a tight leash. We had to shut down the business for the day and had to get back to post the days mail. Perhaps I will make the Nationals when I will have more time to spend. If we do we will do stay taking a mini vacation. ;D
DEadeye Dick, as said Brother James (Texas Lawdog) we want YOU!
Jeff "Steel Horse Bailey" Hiram's Ranger #105 (as in 105mm Tank Gun! ;D )
JoeC, I think we met at the welcome table but I didn't get your name then. I'm VERY sorry that I missed meeting up with you and all the rest of the CAS City Netizens who were there, but I missed meeting!

I saw you go by Bailey but had others I was taking care of at the time. I'm sure we will meet up again eventually. I saw a few people that I thought I recognized from their avatar but eye sometimes lies to me. For those that saw me I have a patch on my left eye. ;)

JoeC, I remember your eye-patch! We'll talk sometime!!
Deadeye Dick, you betcha, Brother! I was raised at last year's (2011) National Shoot. I've only been a MM about 1.5 years now, so I'm still "learning" ... which never stops. I got interested and BEGAN the process while I was stationed in Germany (U.S. Army, 11th Cav. "Border Guard/SpeedBump" 1983-1990) but I never got beyond the "interview" before I was rotated to Ft. Riley and then off to "the Big Sandbox" for Desert Storm, Dec.'90-May.'91.
The badge is a "Looker" ... and I'm not normally a Badge-aholic like many collectors! But it is SPECIAL!
SHB, It was a special honor to attend the Ranger's meeting with you. We talked about you becoming a Mason at the 2010 NCOWS SW Regional. I hope I had a little influence on your decision to become one.
Yes it did. I'm very grateful ... and proud.
SHB and TL,
Will tentatively plan to do it at the next convention. SHB, I would say #105 was very appropriate for you.

Indeed! I was lucky enough to be member "number something-or-other," but was close enough to 105 that Trap allowed me to "grab" #105 for my own amazement & amusement!
