Tonight on a new episode of Pawn stars, they are featuring a Colt Single Action someone brings in. Let's see if the "expert" gets it right this time.

I watched that last night and noticed right away that it was a gen 1 with the black powder frame.
When Rick shot it later I noted that they said the rounds were cowboy loads. I'm not sure if there was enough smoke to say for sure if they were black powder or not, but I'm sure you don't want to shoot smokeless in one of these. Can they handle smokeless rounds?
It sure was a nice gun. I would have given the guy the money for it. Didn't like the buscadero holster though. Should have had an authentic period holster to make it look right. ;D

The exact date when they switched to smokeless powder is open to debate. Different sources will give different dates but it was roughly in the 1890's. Some think the early guns are strong enough for smokeless powder, others say no. Certainly you do not want to get cute messing with reloads in a smokeless gun. I'm probably different from most, but an old Colt in rough shape, does nothing for me. I certainly would not have coughed up $3000 for it. I prefer the beauty of a modern Colt or USFA, which duplicates what an old Colt looked like when new. By the way, did you notice the holster rig Rick was wearing, when they went out to test the gun, was not the same one that was with the gun in the shop. Must have had a little waistline discrepancy there.

I could tell from the show that it was a first gen. I guess I like those old guns. Just don't like having to deal with rim fire or Black Powder if I can use smokeless. I'm lazy I guess. But old guns are like old cars and old motorcycles. I like them, but they are probably too much work for me to really want to spend much of my time and money on them. But I still buy them once in a while just so I can say "I had one of those once". ::)

I find it hard to believe a TV "expert" might not be as expert as advertised!
