Title: Marlin 94 in 44 mag to 38-40 conversion
Post by: 38-72 on February 03, 2011, 09:46:12 AM
Has anyone converted a Marlin 94 in 44 mag to either 44-40 or 38-40? And, how did that work out?

I have a Marlin in 44 mag and want to convert it to 38-40.  I know that the barrel will need to be relined, but will any action work be required?

Friend did that several years ago. IIRC all he did was line the barrel, the bolt, extractor, carrier, etc were all close enough to work.

I'm wondering if replacing might work out better. You could put the right markings on the barrel too.

He actually did replace the barrel. Numrich at the time had some 22 inch octagon 44m barrels off a Zane Gray edition(IIRC) Marlin. They were selling them for $45. He swapped the barrel on a carbine, then put a liner in. I don't remeber if he flat filed the stampings off or not.
