Title: Spencer shipping crates *** Photos Added ***
Post by: Crossdrawnj on July 11, 2010, 04:46:44 PM
I am looking for information on how the Spencer rifle co. shipped their rifle/carbines during the CW years. All I could find in Marcot's book were that they were shipped in wooden crates. I would like to find out how many per crate, dimenions, etc. A pic of an original crate would be great or some that have been made by the membership. Thanks.

Probably not what you wanted, but this is all I have been able to find:

Two Flints:
So good to hear from you again. Thank you for the pics of the ammo boxes. They are a big help. I know someone who reproduces shipping boxes and ammo boxes for the Henry rifle. I am looking for a shipping crate for the Spencer's as my CW reenactment group uses them. He may be able to reproduce the Spencer boxes as well. Thanks again.

CrossdrawNJ,

Is this your Henry shipping crate you mentioned in the above post?

Typically US Federal Arsenals packed their carbines and other longarms for shipment and/or storage in wooden cases holding 20 carbines prior to the start of the Civil War.  The illustration presented below is not very clear and I am sorry about that, but packing 20 carbines or rifles in a wooden crate for shipment or storage must have been a bit heavy to say the least :P :P

But, shipping just six (Henry's) at a time doesn't seem very efficient or cost affective in my humble opinion.  Now if someone could find a shipping crate used for the Sharps Carbine, and since Mr. Spencer used/borrowed a lot of Sharps ideas, we may be able to conclude that Spencer Carbines were shipped in the same type of crate as the Sharps Carbine ::) ::) ::)

On further research and according to William B Edwards, "Civil War Guns", the Navy order was ready for shipping (Spencer rifles) by December 25, 1862, packed in chests of ten guns each...and by the end of December, the rifles for the army were also being boxed and shipped out; presumably 20 per chest as General Ripley desired.

Yes. That is the one. I have been e-mailing back and forth with the person who makes them. I want one for the Hnery's, but because our CW unit uses Spencer's, I would like something to fit our impression.

Here again,....not what your looking for as Two Flints said, but I did something about the ammo crate he has pictured,......
This one was with 3/4" thick boards,.....it was all I had,...next one will be 1" boards. I also changed it to UMC&C Co. ..........

The top label is mine the bottom is a copy of the original I used from a book,......Now I need to do my 7x6x42 boxes...
