GEORGE DICKERSON CALLA(O)WAY SENIOR, during the time he drove cattle with his brothers along the Chisholm Trail in the 1800's. He gave up 'cowboying' when he married Leny Carpenter.
Circa 1870's.
Looks like he has chains behind his heels. Must be why he gave up cowboying...!

Not trying to be critical here ... trying to learn.
The roundish thing below his his chin on his left (but above his neckerchief) ... I would have guessed it to be a pipebowl, but I can't seem to see a stem.
Is it my feeble old eyes that don't see the stem, or something else entirely?
No chains, just a pattern on the edge of the rug! ;D Can't tell about the thing by his chin. Wonder if it is a problem in the negative?
I don't have a program here at work to do it, but someone switch the photo back to B&W and then darken it as needed to remove some of the fading, it will show a lot more. ;)
Are those belt loops and a belt at his waist? Maybe Del could enlarge it and change the shading to give it a proper inspection.
Deadeye Dick
I can't enlarge it with out a copy with more pixels, if no one can get it back to the original B&W and darken the fading , I'll see if I have time to at home tonight.
I could not get it to attach but I enhanced it a little and it is a pipe in his mouth.

Can't be belt loops... experts won't allow it...!

Accually all you have to do is prove it, we're an open minded group searching for knowledge.

Look again. There is something on HIS right, going over the belt, where the belt starts angling down.
Bill
It looks more like a string of some sort and there is no loop on the left side in the same way. Thanks Bill, I ain't had time at home to work with it.
As baggy the pants are he may have some rope or string under the gun belt to hold up his pants. Note his is not wearing suspenders. Also like the way he has the gun pulled up in the holster and have the trigger guard resting on the holster and looks like his thumb is on the underside of the hammer to hold the gun.
Once again another great photo from Shotgun Steve and lots great observations.

Cutter, your right.....that holster looks as though it could be made out of cloth the way it sags from the weight of the gun.
OCB
OCB,
You may be right the belt and holster might be cloth. Look at the belt were it angles down to the pistol grip. The edges look really rough like a frayed web belt.
Cutter
I thought about making a cloth (canvas) shoulder holster, but decided not to because I couldn't document it. Hmmmm...
Books
Here's the curse of being new at this:
Ya'll noticed the string to hold up his pants. I noticed that he looks just like Alfalfa with a mustache.
