The Model 1873 was one of the most popular lever-action rifles Winchester ever produced. Manufactured in 1883, this museum quality example of the desirable Third Model is chambered for the popular 44 Winchester Center Fire caliber. The rifle was originally produced with a straight stock and shotgun butt plate and a round barrel. The gun was reworked into its current configuration by the installation of an octagonal barrel with a pre ban legally imported elephant ivory stock complete with pistol grip and rifle butt plate. The ivory carving was completed over the period of several years with one side recreating Frederick Remington's A Dash for the Timber which was first published in 1890 and is currently on display in the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth. The other side depicts a classic stagecoach under attack and all carving was completed by Paul Persinger of El Paso Texas. The spectacular engraving of the receiver was executed by Leo Ferguson of Lubbock, Texas and is both period correct and flawless. This one of a kind work of art is accompanied by a written appraisal from Christies for $235,000.
Due to illness, the owner must part with this gun.
