I sent Marshal Halloway a suggestion for a new Society for those of us who are interested in the Winchester Model of 1876.
Given that we now have two makers building replicas of the 1876 Winchester, and being as there is little to no organized clearing house of info on these rifles and their calibers, what do you folks think about a board here devoted to the 1876? The good Marshal is open to the idea, if we have enough interest.
I suggest The Brotherhood of 1876. Whatscha think, pards and pardettes? :)
It would make me sound so OLD! I.m on. Rattlesnake Jack has a good topic going in the Barracks already, Might not hurt to consolidate the info, ' cause there's quite a lot to learn!

Har! I guess it does sound old! I resemble that remark! :D
There is a lot to learn - or relearn - about the model of 1876.
As a new M'76 shooter I think this is a good idea as yes, there is a lot to be learned (re-learned) about the if's, and's or but's of this rifle.
So that the topic doesn't go dry after a month or two you might consider including other big bore lever and pump action rifles in it also.
Just my two bits worth.

Sounds ok to me, but any non-pistol caliber big bor is welcome in BROw if you don't get enough interest in a seperate group. Read the Who can join thread, just ignore the parts about Buicks if you want, we got a little off topic. ;)
I also think this would be a great idea!

Those carbines are sweet. By the way, I think both Uberti and Chaparral now have the rifle available with the 22 inch barrel as well.
Sadly it is gonna be a couple years before I can afford one, but I want one for deer hunting, the Sharps is just too long and heavy for walking and although the 99 in 243 and the Big Bore 375 will handle any deer I see, just want one.
Grizzly Adams,
Just read through all the posts on the '76 and I think it would be a good idea. I was able to pick up a Cimarron by Uberti a couple of weeks ago. Havn't been able to shoot it yet, don't have any brass. But I got my dies three days ago and have my brass on order from Rocky Mountain Cartridge Co. Mine is the 28" rifle and it sure feels good when you shoulder the weapon. Looking forward to hearing more from others. By the way I"ll be shooting BP only.
Thanks Texas Sarge

Have you tried the BP loads, but just have not found the right combination? What smokeless powder at you using?
Grizz...
I had a lot of trouble at first with accuracy of the .45-60 in the 76. Turned out the crown was bad & sent it back to Taylor's. They didn't fix it properly so I had to send it to John King in Kila MT. He pulled the barrel & crowned it properly. This is what Taylor's should have done. I could see that the crown hadn't been corrected when they returned it.
Now, at 75 yds., I can get 1 inch groups using 24 grain of Accurate 5744 & the RCBS 45-300GC bullet sized .001 over groove dia.
Now that I know the rifle will shoot I'll start trying blackpowder as soon as I get a chance.
Cheers,
Cat

Howdy, Chick. Good to hear from ya! Yep, got that new Uberti 76 at BT and got all plum exicipated! :D Actually, I have been fascinated with the model for many years. I have a couple of originals that I have shot off and on. These new ones should allow us to explore the potential of the caliber family as well as the design - without having to put added wear and tear on the old ones.
As for the 40-60, Mike V and some others seem to hold a low opinion of the caliber. Light caliber in one of the heaviest rifles kind of thing. I have had no experience with it, but figure it should make a fine deer hunting round, as well as a good mid range caliber. Given the weight of the rifle, I suspect it will be a super combination to shoot!
As for price, I saw that Pecos Clyde was selling his Chap 40-60 for $700, which seems like a steal to me. Most I have seen have been along the order of $1000+
Since Rattlesnake Jack is putting up some lever porn, here is one of my originals. 45-75 short rifle with shotgun butt, "as finished for the English trade." British proofed.

By the way, if anyone is interested in acquiring one of these reprinted maps (only available folded, unfortunately) to go with their new NWMP carbine, they can be acquired from the RCMP Museum Gift Shop, for the princely sum of Cdn$2.00! By the way, that 1873 carbine/short musket is outstanding! Where did you get the components for that conversion?
Howdy, I didn't realize the 76's were chambered for 50-95 until a friend of mine pulled one off the shelf at his "Gun Shop" in St. Bonifacius, MN. He said it is the first one shipped to MN. I believe it was a Cimmeron. The wood is really choice. He commented, on the ammo for this rifle "you might as well buy the loaded stuff, its about the same price as the brass alone". I can see why a person would like to have one of these Winchester clones, right nice piece of history that still makes sense, and a pleasure to own. Hutch
Griz,
I like your 22" bbl a lot, are you pleased with the bbl length now that you've shot it a bunch ? I have the standard 28" bbl length- GREAT shooting results but I have flirted with the idea of lopping off 2" to make it a little handier. It just shoots so well I'm afraid to mess with it.

In 1879 Winchester sold a buncha '73s to Spain. There was a regular musket. and then there was a cavalry carbine exactly like Jack made up.

Well, actually the gunsmith who did it up for me (on an original 1882-made M'73 action which was completely 'orphaned') got or made everything. He does all his stockmaking from scratch, and I understand he fabricated both the nosecap and the buttplate. He specializes in restoring and restocking vintage firearms ... and is quite a wizard at it ..... provided you're prepared to "wait the wait", if you know what I mean. (About three years, in this case .....)
Mind you, he's not at all averse to "making do" - for example, since the magazine tube is entirely concealed and protected by the forestock, he made it out of standard copper plumbing pipe ... and it works like a charm!
My, that's a mighty handsome lookin' rifle y'got there, Electric Factory!

Hey, EF. I really like the weight and overall balance of the 76 with the 22 inch barrel. I tend to prefer carbines and short rifles, and this one shoots very well for me. Sounds like yours is a keeper in terms of shooting. I don't think I would mess with a good thing! ;)

I was aware of the "Spanish carbine" that Sir Charles has referenced, but this is the first I have seen outside of GM's Winchester book. It is really a nice looking combination. Uberti or Chaparral should consider a run of them. I'd buy one!
In any case, your gunsmith is a talented fellow, and did a fine piece of work there. :)

Well, Gentlemen, what say you?! :)
If you want to keep it just a 76 board then Winchester76 would be good, but if you want it to be a big bore lever gun board then............ BBLR or Big Bore Lever Rifles as an example.
Designed for people who own or are interested in the 1876 Winchester and reproductions.
Designed for people who own or are interested in the big bore lever rifles and carbines pre 1900.
Regards. Deadeye.
I'm more for concentrating on the 1876 Winchester. ;) I'm sure it will be visited by shooters of other .50-95 or .45-60 guns.
As Hobie said, "1876 Winchester" or Winchester Model 1876.
In their 1878 catalog, the cartridge illustration indicates "Winchester Centennial Model 1876".
w44wcf
Here is an idea. It could be called something like:
THE CENTENIAL BOARD
with the fine print stating that other big bore (40 caliber and above) lever and pump guns could be addressed also.
Just an idea for the future members to kick around.

I am inclined to agree that this is a more specialized, and currently less well supported model. Much is established knowledge in terms of loading for the 45-70 for example. Not to say that those folks would not be welcome to visit and post.
For the board name I suggest,
"The Winchester Model 1876."
Description statement: The Winchester Model 1876 board serves as a clearing house for information related to the history, shooting, or collecting of the Winchester Model 1876 and the modern replicas of the Winchester Centennial model.

It looks like this is really going somewhere. For those who don't already know, I would like to remind you that for the past 6 years, I have been collecting serial number data on original 1876 Winchesters. To date, I have serial numbers and specs on over 3000 original guns that still exist today. This is nearly 5% of the total production, which is estimated at just under 64,000 guns. If you have an original 1876 carbine, rifle or musket, I would be happy to add it to my list. Condition of the gun is not important. Whether it is altered or refinished in not important, as I still want to add it to the list. I will even include stripped receivers and rusty dug-ups as long as the serial number is legible. I am interested in the serial number, caliber, configuration of the gun and any rework that may have been done. If you have an original you would like added to my list, please email me and let me know. Necessary info as follows.
serial number
rifle, carbine or musket
caliber
barrel length (always measured from face of breech bolt to end of muzzle)
barrel shape (round, octagon, half round, extra heavy)
special order extras (examples as follows)
set trigger
sling swivels (original or add on)
half magazine
case colored receiver (original or redo)
enscribed, engraved
plated finish (if so, what parts)
special sights
cresent rifle butt or shotgun butt
Sub catagory-wood only
fancy grade wood (1X, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x)
checkered
straight grip or pistol grip
If you have a factory letter on your gun, most of the special order extras that were ordered on the gun when new, will be listed in the letter. I say "most" special orders, but not all. Example, most letters do not mention sling and swivels although many guns do have them. Often times, special order sights are not mentioned either.
Again, I appreciate any and all help and look forward to adding additional serial numbers to my list. I must also say that your name, address, phone number or any other personal info is not required and not part of my survey.
Adios,
Buck

I would humbly suggest a minor modification to the description statement:
The Winchester Model 1876 board is dedicated to the history, shooting, and / or collecting of the Winchester Model 1876 and the modern replicas of the Winchester Centennial model.

Har! ;D Are you suggesting that I am long winded!!?? :D
Works for me! :)
Thanks to a link from Hobie over at Leverguns.com, I am pleased to find a board here devoted to the 1876. I don't have much to say most of the time, so am usually just lurking. I do very much enjoy my Taylor's 1876. It's a .45-60 with 28" barrel, high grade wood, and added Marble's tang sight and Beech front sight.

Grizzly Adams,
Not at all. ;) "Dedicated" just seemed like the right word to use. :)
Old Shasta,
Beautiful looking rifle!

Welcome, Old Shasta! That's really a fine looking 76. Has the wood been refinished, or is that "out of the box."?
w44wcf, I agree! Dedicated is the right word. I think we will go with that wording! :)
Cool! When did the similies all get hats? :D
I'll join in too.
Thanks for the compliments on my 1876. The wood & finish is "out of the box". The only thing I did was add sights and lighten up the trigger pull, which was in excess of the 12 lbs. my gauge is capable of reading.

Did you pay extra for upgraded wood?
Greetings all,
Count me in. I have a Chaparral Model 1876 in 45-75, 28" barrel and its a fine shooter. 72 grs of Goex 2F, .200 compression and .060 card wad with 350 grain Lee FNFP, using Bertram brass which is expensive but I like it(more case capacity and more dimensionally correct than Jamison or converted .348) So far have taken whitetail deer, bison, lots of ruffed grouse and one huge bobcat. It kills like the hammer of Thor and I really like the 28" barrel. It carries easily, even here in the thick woods of northern MN, and digests the full cases of blackpowder. Sorry for getting windy and thanks for dedicating a shooters forum to the 76.
Big Goose
Grizzly Adams,
To recap then........

Welcome Big Goose. :) Sounds like you have put that 76 to good use! :)
Gents, I have sent the good Marshal the title and description, as noted above by W44WCF. Let's ride! :)
I am out of pocket for a couple of days. Driving over to Hobbs to pick up some of the Holy Black! ;)
Old Shasta:
What did you do to lighten up your trigger? The pull, on my '76" was like yours. I have been able to get it down to a tad over 5 pounds by replacing the two trigger parts and putting a piece of leather on top of the mainspring base and backing off the tension screw a tad. Am waiting for another mainspring so that I can play with that. This has alot of potential for a fun-type web site. Glad I got on.
I sure like my "Cimmie" '76" and it is a shooter! ;)
Howdy Grizzly!
My 76 is from Taylor's made by Uberti. I gotta say the workmanship isn't top notch especially the metal to wood fit, probably going to restock it. Too bad, it's got a nice piece of wood, just not done well. But hell I ain't complain'n, I got a 76!

Deadeye Don- to answer your question, I was fortunate enough to buy my rifle off an internet ad from a private party, new in the box. He stated that the fancy wood cost an extra $150. Money well spent I think!
larryo 1- Most new guns these days feature "lawyer-proof" trigger pull. With a good bit of study I have learned to dis-assemble my rifles, polish the moving parts, and stone down the hammer-trigger sear to suit myself. Sometimes it takes quite a while to tear down, polish, re-assemble, try the trigger, repeat, repeat, repeat.... until I get it right.
I'm in. I've got a Chaparral in .45-75, a Uberti in .45-60 and an original Win. in .45-60.
