Title: C Sharps company
Post by: Deadeye Don on May 02, 2007, 07:18:04 AM
Howdy all,    I am in the market for a Sharps rifle for long distance shooting.  I have been looking at both the Pedersoli and C Sharps brands.   I am familiar with the quality of the Pedersoli rifles as I already have a Springfield Trapdoor officers model from Pedersoli in 45-70 Gov.   I do need more information on the C Sharps brand of Sharps rifles.   If any of you actually have one and would care to comment on your rifle, I would be most appreciative.   Safe Shooting.  Deadeye.

interesting news.  The website is still active and they are still advertizing all ready made rifles.  Perhaps someone else knows what is up with them.

    Howdy,

I have owned  a C. Sharps rifle in .45-70 caliber for better than a dozen years now and I really like it.  I shot a handful of smokeless loads thru it when I first got it, but everything since has been  black powder loads.  I dont think you can beat those Badger barrels for quality.  My shooting pard has several C. Sharps rifles and he likes all of them; as a matter of fact he replaced his Pedersolis with them.  I have a Pedersoli rolling block, and its a good rifle, but it is not on a par with the C. Sharps , at least in my humble opinion.  Hope this is of some help to you.

Regards,

Jubal Starbuck, who grins for about 3 days after  shootin' his C. Sharps

Thank you for your reply Jubal.  What model sharps do you and your friend have?.  I am considering the 1874 carbine in 45-70. Also,  have you heard anything about CSharps being up for sale?  Safe shooting.  Deadeye.

My Sharps is an 1874 model with standard walnut stock and standard weight bbl. in a 30" length.  I did get it with a poured pewter nose cap, which I am glad I ordered.   Just counting up people I know with C. Sharps guns, I can come up with seven guys who are also 1874 model shooters and some own more than one. A couple own 1875 models also.  One has a '74 carbine with a 26" bbl. and just loves it. Says it's real hard on coyotes.  I heard C. Sharps was for sale a year or so back, but I don't know any more than that.

Regards,

Jubal

Ok,

I have decided to order the 1874 Hunters Carbine in 45-70.  I am debating if it is worth some extra bucks to get a wood upgrade.  If you wouldnt mind asking your friend if he got the standard wood on his stock and how he likes it,  I would appreciate it.  I was very surprised to learn that CSharps can have my gun made up in about 1 months time.   Heck thats faster than I can get most Italian clones.   Safe shooting.  Deadeye.

Hi,
Just my dos centavos, but wouldn't the carbine's shorter barrel be a disadvantage in long distance shooting?
I don't shoot long distance myself, so this is just an honest question.

I am ordering the 26 inch barrel so I think I will be ok for long range.  It is actually the same length as my Pedersoli springfield trapdoor officers model.  I am not planning on shooting a mile at this point anyways.   ;D   Safe shooting. Deadeye.

Several years ago, I owned a C Sharps 1874, heavy weight barrel, straight grip in 45/100.  Very accurate rifle once I found a load it liked.  Sold it because I didn't need the powder or recoil.  The C Sharps rifles come with a steel butt plate, unlike the Shiloh's but I think their fit and finish is about 95% of what a Shiloh's is.  Of course, you wait 18 months for a Shiloh and only 3 -4 months for a C Sharps (unless you buy one from stock).  My rifle had plain wood, nice but straight grain.

For a carbine length, I would recommend a shotgun butt stock, not the curved rifle butt.  Much easier in the shoulder.

The C Sharps company is for sale, the owner is getting older and wants to retire.  Some people have not gotten along with the owner and this has lead to a spotty reputation about the company and their guns.  The times I've talked to personnel at the company, they have been very nice.  As far as I am concerned, C Sharps firearms are top quality but just not quite what a Shiloh is.

Ok thanks for all the replys.   I went ahead and ordered my baby from C sharps.  It will be here in 30 to 60 days  (should I hold my breath?).   Pictures will be forthcoming when I get it.   Safe shooting.  Deadeye.

I own a C. Sharps 40/90 bottle neck.  It is a 1874 model and I think it is a top quality weapon.  I also own two Shiloh model 1874's. Like the other gents reported the finish is a little better on the Shiloh's.  I don't think you could go wrong with a C.Sharps gun.

I just ordered a C. Sharps in .40-70 ss.
C. Sharps is as good as Shiloh & I do like the Badger barrels.

I've owned a C. Sharps 1875 in .38-55 for two years.  I bought one of the in-stock rifles.  It has regular wood and shotgun butt plate.  I'm very happy with the fit and finish.  It has the mid-range sights and is a tack driver.  My shooting pard has a highwall and 1875 from C. Sharps.  The highwall is one of the most accurate rifles I've seen.  My dealings with C. Sharps have all been positive.

I received my C. Sharps .40-70 ss a month or so ago.
Fit & finish is ever bit as good as Shiloh.
C. Sharps was a joy to deal with.  They were very responsive to my questions before & after the rifle was finished.
And yes....I'd certainly buy from them again.
