How would it be?

Stump Water

Some random musing on a lazy evening.

The year is 1880.  You're just an average Joe (or Joan), not a "big rancher" type and not a drover workin' for a big outfit, doin' what ya can to get by:

If you have to get from point A to point B, would you saddle the horse or hitch up the buckboard or wagon?  No load to carry, you're just travelin'.

If you wake up at 2am and have to "take care of business", will ya trek to the outhouse or do ya keep a pot inside?

Would ya keep chickens or buy/trade for eggs and such?  How 'bout a milk cow... would ya have one?

Would ya tend a garden?

Would ya hunt wild game for food?

I'll assume you'd have a gun handy.  What is it?

What's your trade?

What three things will you always have on hand?

How 'bout a milk cow... would ya have one? Depends on whether er not ya got yonkers livin' with ya.

Would ya tend a garden? You betcha

Would ya hunt wild game for food? Definately!

I'll assume you'd have a gun handy.  What is it? Probably a 73 Winchester and a scattergun

What's your trade? Small rancher

What three things will you always have on hand?  Coffee, salt, ammo

I would have ta go along with Sleep, But of tha 3 things always on hand, Flour or salt pork would prolly be kept on hand rather than coffee, There's always Chicory around to use, and it's cheaper

Naw Maj, ain't never anything good on tee-vee.  Weather didn't look good this AM so me 'n tha Bride decided ta hole up here in the castle and do exactly nuthin'.  Been putterin' around taday, enjoyin' tha amenities of modern-day life (and doin' nuthin') and had a few thoughts cross my mind (surprisin', I know) about how it'd be if the year was 1880.

Chicory?  *hack*

I'd run a few head of cattle, but mostly I'd be breaking horses.  I assume I'd get to keep Miss Pam, so she would tend to the garden and the chickens, I'd help her when I had time.  Outhouse except during the occasional blizzard :o, I'd alway have my pistol, but I'd probably have a 76 Centennial Model Winchester (better for hunting) around and a 1878 Colt double barrel shotgun.  Three things I'd always have handy, would be jerky, a good supply of fresh water, and a bunch of ammo.... ;D

Ammo won't do ya any good without a gun handy?  ;D

Purty much gotta go along with what Sleep said.  If yer an average Joe or Joan Ya aint gonna hitch a team and drive a wagon unless its yer trade, ya gotta haul stuff ta sell inta Town or ya gotta pick up goods from Town.  Outhouse definitely, keeps tha smell away from tha livin quarters.  Same fer tha chickens, cow, garden,  an huntin.  Purty much agree ya gonna have rifle an a scattergun, most likely aint gonna have a sidearm unless its left over from the war or was passed down to you, the other two are more useful for huntin an if its four or two legged varmints ya want somethin that will take them out in close quarters without fancy gunplay or careful aiming (scattergun) or something to use at longer distance (rifle), might be a Henry rather than a 73, all depends on what the feller or lady could afford or had passed down to them.  Yep coffe salt an ammo, chicory aint werth drinkin, ya might raise some hogs build a smokeshed an salt yer own beef an pork, make yer own jerky too.  An ya always gotta have ammo.  ;D

Gun.  mind ya!  That be singular.

If you have to get from point A to point B, would you saddle the horse or hitch up the buckboard or wagon?  No load to carry, you're just travelin'.  Horse for myself and sons, buckboard for the missus.

If you wake up at 2am and have to "take care of business", will ya trek to the outhouse or do ya keep a pot inside?  Chamber pot for the missus, outhouse for me and the boys.

Would ya keep chickens or buy/trade for eggs and such?  How 'bout a milk cow... would ya have one?  We'd keep chickens and a milk cow.

Would ya tend a garden?  Let the boys and missus tend to that.

Would ya hunt wild game for food?  Absolutely!

I'll assume you'd have a gun handy.  What is it?  Would have more than a gun, but the "house gun" would be a Colt SAA .45 with a 4 3/4" barrel, same as my carry gun.

What's your trade?  No doubt about it, Gunsmith. With being a lawdawg on the side.

What three things will you always have on hand?  Coffee, sugar, and beans.

No young Buzzerd, you said "I'll assume you'd have a gun handy.  What is it?"

Your assumption was incorrect as are most assumptions.
There are many and diverse options available.
