I think I know what the problem is here....you guys are watching an 'R' rated movie on TNT or on some other lame-o network channel where it's all chopped to hell.
Watch the whole thing as it was meant to be seen...uncut, not 'cleaned up' for unparented 5-year-olds into something unrecognizeable.  Jeez.

Marshal Will Wingam

OK, I saw it uncut or cleaned up and it still didn't impress me.

I second that!  Leo cannot act, Russel Crowe can act better than Leo and so can Sharon Stone and what the heck was Gene Hackman doing in that movie?  He must have owed someone something.  Throw into this mix a poorly written story and you have crud.  The concept is not a bad one, though.  Too bad for the writing.

You cannot cover up bad writing even if each actor were an outstanding player. :(

LOL!  Gene Hackman played the 'boss' of the town, much like the part he played in 'Unforgiven'.

I don't think anyone's claiming that 'The Quick and the Dead' is Oscar material, just that as far as Westerns go, it's worth ** out of **** stars.  (And one could do a lot worse, just watch the Western Channel sometimes.)

And speaking of lousy Westerns ...I saw 'Sons of Katie Elder' the other day.  Ouch.  Compared to that one 'The Quick and the Dead' does look like Oscar material :)

Capt. James H. Callahan

I really like the one with Sam Elliott. The one with Gene Hackman is so bad I couldn't stand to watch it and changed the channel. Think I'd rather watch Treasure of Silver Lake! (GAG!)

Better than Sons of Katy Elder? You better stay out of the sun so much Jiminy ole pard! ;D

My 2 cents.

The Quick and The Dead?  Doesn't that have something to do with Los Angeles pedestrians?

I don't think the Sharon Stone/Gene Hackman version of "The Quick and the Dead" was meant to be taken too seriously.  I bought the DVD, and I've seen it two or three times.  Our club used it as the theme for our annual match back in February, with each of the eight stages based on one of the gunfights.  It worked out pretty well.

Here's a website with some of the inside information on the making of the movie:  The Quick and the Dead

All I can say is the only version that Louis L'Amour would appreciate is the Sam Elliot version,,,,,more like what he originally wrote, welllllllllll  as more like as Hollywood will allow.
