A drill press vice and a set of checkering files from Brownells and take your time.  It's about a three cup job ;-)

Sometimes it's best to recognize your limitations. I won't tackle it.
I could buy the tools and practice  but probably never use it again.

Well,
In that case, I'd agree with Major 2 and Hoof Hearted and recommend Gary Barnes (whom is Hoof Hearted).  Very skilled craftsman and very honest.  You won't be disappointed.  I could've recommended myself  but I retired (just got back from 3 weeks at Disney World).

Hi,

Just to put my $0.02 in, Cap Coyote's son does all his Dad's stock work. he did my Model 87 (pictured below) and is going to do my '73 Codymatic ...

My moniker is my great grandfather's name. He served with the 2nd Florida Mounted Regiment in the Civil War. Afterward, he came home, packed his wife into a wagon, and was one of the first NorteAmericanos on the Frio River southwest of San Antonio ..... Kinda where present day Dilley is ...

Hey hoof,
Don't want you to feel too bad.  Cap's son uses a laser engraving machine :-).  Did fine work on one of my shotguns.

Right.
But if you want excellent wood checkering at a reasonable price contact Juli Marx.
She has always done a great job  for me on maybe ten different guns. 1-360-360-1903

These checkered after I stripped them and stained and refinished with Plinkington's products.

Hoof,
Of course.  Checkering files aren't of much use on wood :o.  We're just experiencing a bit of thread drift.  Now where were we?? Oh,
Yea .... the OP should contact Hoof Hearted.
OP wanted hammers checkered.  4lb drill driver 'll take a while.
I just couldn't resist   ::)
