Cimarron Thunderer
« on: November 16, 2012, 08:49:23 PM »
Hi y'all, I'm back with another question.  I'm looking at a Cimarron reproduction Colt 1878 Thunderer 44WCF as a sort of backup to my Remmie (which I haven't been able to get a hold of yet  ::)  ),  but I'm not sure about getting it, so I'm looking for somebody to make up my mind for me.  ;D  Any advice is appreciated. See y'all 'round.

Howdy Kid, you might get more responses if you put this in the Colt SAA Clone section, since that's what the Thunderer is.  It isn't actually an "1878" Thunderer, it is actually just a Model P single action with the Thunderer-style gripframe.  Having said that, I would just ask if you have handled a Thunderer?  Some people love the way it feels, some don't like it at all.  I'm one of those who loves it  :)  And for stouter loads, the little hump on the grip helps to keep it from rolling in your hand like a standard "rounded" birdshead might.

Thanks for the prompt response Abilene, I didn't know it was just a model P.  I am a little new to this, so I suppose I can't feel too bad about it ;) As for handling one, I just got my first feel for em yesterday, a 375 with a 3 1\2 inch barrel.  I liked it a lot as did my mom. The only problem was there wasn't a firing range :(  I am actually looking for a 5 1\2 inch barrel in 44-40, but the feel was awesome.  I am kind of looking for an argument to sway me towards getting one or away, whichever is stronger ;D
Thank y'all for yer time.

Howdy

Glad ya made it over to our part of CAS City!

I have had a couple and the Cimarron grip is the best of the "birdshead" clones IMHO ;D
I currently have one in 3" (is it 3 or 3.5?) and the checkered grips in 44WCF and it makes a dandy "goin' to town pistol".

I own two of them in .45 colt. As mentioned above they make great town guns.

Okay, thank y'all kindly for the useful input, I think I've been swayed towards it. So now for my next question, what would y'all call a reasonable price for one. Strait from Cimarron it says $572 and some change, but from both of my semi local gunshops list them for $650-$700 plus shipping for the special order. What are y'alls sentiments on this?  Thank y'all very much.

I've had my Cimarron Thunder in .44 Spcl since 1995, and had a Bob Munden action job that same year.   I am short in stature and have short fingers and I absolutely love this gun and grip.  It fits my hand perfectly and the design of the grip does help with recoil.

I have the 3 1/2" barrel on mine with the checkered wood grips...  It is a beauty!

I paid $450 back in 1995 for mine...  I don't plan on getting rid of it.

Hope this helps.  The gun I am referring to is the bottom one in the attached picture.

Hey Slickshot, nice irons! ;D I'm pretty short too (5' 4"-ish) with really short thumbs and kind of long fingers, so the smaller grip would be nice for me probably.  As for the recoil, I am not really sensitive, but I haven't shot anything bigger than my .410 in a handgun (my .410 isn't really a handgun, it's a H&R Youth Pardner with a 15 inch barrel and 11 inch length of pull, but it kicks hard.), so I just ain't sure ::)  I guess I'll find out about that when I get it.  I'm still looking 'round for one with a good price on it, though. As I said in my last post, I can't find one at a local gunshop for less than $650, so Imma gonna keep a-lookin'.  By the way, does anybody have any idea on how hard these little guys kick in 44-40?

This one (not mine) was done by Ford's Custom Gun Refinishing
and is pictured on their web page.

I have simlar piece in 45 Colt  with the same Barrel length & Plow Handle ( also Pictured on Fords site )
Felt recoil is noteable but not harsh

Wow, ain't that set-up pretty! :D  At the moment I am trying to fix a U.S.R.C. distributed Iver Johnson Model of 1900 in 38 Long Colt. It's an old double action government gun with a six inch barrel. I'll have to post a picture, if I can figure out how...........

Kid,
Two things.  First, Cimarron does not carry the 44-40 Thunderer in 5 1/2".  Only 3 1/2" and 4 3/4".  I think they are both in stock, from the last inventory list I saw.  And the MSRP you saw on the Cimarron website is about the highest you should expect to pay.  Most dealers charge the customer less than that.  I'd suggest finding another dealer.  Any dealer with an FFL can order from Cimarron and get the dealer price.  Then how much the dealer charges you for their profit is up to them, but I think the price quoted you from the dealer you mentioned is very excessive, unless you were looking for one with options like checkered grips and nickle plate, or some such.

Thank you Major for telling me how to post pictures, now I can show you that gun :)

And Abiline, according to the Cimarron sight, they carry the Thunderer in 44WCF and 5 1\5 inch barrel for $572.60, standard blue.  Here is the name of the page.

http://www.cimarron-firearms.com/cartridge-revolvers/thunderer-1/thunderer-1/thunderer-44-wcf-5-1-2-in-model-ca308.html

And here is a picture of U.S.R.C.

See y'all around.

Trinity Kid,

Mine is .44 Special, and does have a bit less kick than a .45 Colt, but not that much less in my opinion.  My recommendation to you is to find a local SASS or cowboy shooting club and see if you could pay for the ammo and see what you think of the recoil.

I will not shoot a .44 Mag, too much recoil for me personally... I can get by shooting up to .45 Colt.  The gun in my picture on the top left is a Beretta Stampede .357 Mag/ .38 Special... I shoot .38 Special thru it, and now and then shoot .357 thru it, but I don't like the much harder recoil!

Good luck...

Thank you Slickshot for the info on that, Anything and Everything helps ;D .  As for finding a SASS group, the nearest one is four hours away in Sacramento, so that is problematic.  I might be able to find somebody who has one in town, though.  I live in a pretty small town, population 4000-ish, unfortunately, a good deal are from San-Fransisco and anti-anything fun.  just the other day I was chewed out because my old truck in the driveway had the hood open and they came, onto MY property (more of my landlords, but, hey minor details) and complained about the grease on my engine ???   Back to the original subject, I'll try and find a Thunderer in  a decent caliber :)

Thank you all for your time.

Sounds like you might live in Weaverville.  I live in Sonora and we have the same population movement here.  Guess I will return for my final years to Jefferson State.

Check out Bastiani Arms in Redding.  Good folks.

Give the man a cigar!! You guessed right, I do live in Weaverville.  I forgot about Bastiani's, thank you for reminding me.  I'll look there next time I'm in Redding, if circumstances allow.  ;D

See y'all 'round.

I know, it is pretty rough. Gas prices are down to $3.98 again, so that is nice. But I lost my job at our local movie theater (which I hadn't even started), but I'll get a new one.  At least I don't have any bills yet.  A little-known secret here is that I'm only a teenager, so bills ain't a problem ;)    Don't tell nobody.

Son don't want to throw water on your camp fire but ... a couple of us suspected you might be when you wrote "I liked it a lot as did my mom. The only problem was there wasn't a firing range "  ;D

There is also a SASS club in Redding:  The Shasta Regulators  Another club north of you is in Montague : the Hawkinsville Claim Jumpers.
