Take a look for an artist named Stephen Wade.  He a banjo player, but also a folk music researcher.

His album "Dancing in the Parlor" is a good sampling of his work.

I play it alot during meals at our big matches.  Folks seem to like it.

There is also Dave Bourne (aka Professor Dave Bourne). He has several CDs available.

PS- He also was the piano player on HBO's Deadwood.

I also have found period music at my local library.

Here is a sample of Dave Bourne.

As a kid I listened to Dave most weekends at Knotts Berry Farm.

All of their music may not be strictly from the 1870's, you might check out Mark Gardner & Rex Rideout and Don Edwards. They are cowboy/frontier music historians. Also Fiddlin Johnny has a good CD of cowboy music.

Another good choice (probably my favorite) is the Gillette Brothers, Guy and Pipp.  I listen to their music all the time.  Some of it is 20th century, but they have a very wide swath they cut.

One of the vendors we used at the SW Regional at Greenville, Old Scyene, has CD's of piano music that are period correct. I believe the fellow's name is Dave Bourne or something like that. His music was the piano music heard in HBO's Deadwood in the Gem Saloon.
Hope that is what you are looking for.

David Bourne's Volume 2 has the most period correct music.  Some of his stuff is post 1900.

I like Don Edwards, he does lots of old cowboy songs some post 1900.  He uses Maxwell's music compilation for most of his songs.  I think Maxwell is post 1900 but he collected all the traditional songs.

The 24th Annual Cowboy Symposium is being held in Lubbock this week end.  I am taking my 3 yr old grandaughter to see if I can get her bitten by the Don Edwards/R.W. Hampton bug at an early age.  If I live long enough she may be a shooter and help prolong the life of the sport.

If you want TRUE period music (period to the 1870's) you would do well to listen to more of the Civil War era groups.  Most of the songs that were heard during this time period would have been around just prior to, during and after the war.  What was popular during the 60’s was, largely, still popular during the 70’s.   Minstrel songs, parlor songs and even some classical pieces would all have been heard in what we consider the “old west.”

“Cowboy songs” as we think of them, are largely a 20th century invention, with most of the ones we think of as “period,” being written between 1890 and 1920.  The songs that were actually “sung on the trail” would have been earlier tunes.

True period music would be played on original or period reproduction instruments without steel strings.  Gut strings were the rule during the 1870’s.  It’s extremely rare to hear any “cowboy” recording done in this fashion.  Most artists prefer the more modern steel strings.

There are several good groups from the Civil War genre that do perform period songs on period instruments (with the correct strings).  Groups like The Camptown Shakers and the 2nd South Carolina String Band are a good place to start.  There are several others, but if you’re looking for TRUE period correct music for the 1870’s, you’ll need to by-pass the Cowboy genre and go a bit earlier.
