Rowdy, That bear hunter needs him a few little black dogs(Stephens Stock). They were called Mt. Curs then and would be PC from 1700's to today. Tj  :)

I love those hunting stories . Word has it he always carried a folding knife in his boot . A large barlow single blade that he kept razor sharp .

You may not know this, but ole Rowdy was the one who introduced Ben Lilly to the little black stock of Mt. Curs for his pack of bear dogs. Tj

All Hunters love the little black dogs , those Mt. Curs are hard to beat . But my favorite is the Stephens Stock .

Yes if you have those little black dogs (Stephens Stock) you will sure need a good pocket knife and skinning knives. They will tree and catch plenty of game for you to skin and eat. Tj  ;D

Yesterday I ordered a opinel and a couple barlows from SMKW . I know that Mark Twain wrote about the Barlow pocket knifes in his books . Pocket knives was a part of everyday life , from the Farmer , Rancher ,Miner, to the people who lived in  Town .

Today I got the knives I ordered from SMKW . The single bladed barlows were good looking knives . The Opinel is a nice looking knife also , and Sharp too . I plan on carrying a folding knife in my boot .

Question ???
The single bladed Barlow . I have read where it was first displayed in 1876 at the Philadelphia Expo , but then there is a picture of the knife and a date on 1855 . What is the correct date .

Which Opinel did you buy?  Are all of them pretty much authentic?  They're one cool knife.  I was by SMKW about 10 years ago, nice place.

Here are some of the pocket knives recovered from the steamboat Arabia that sank in 1856-

Pocket knives just like these were still being listed and shown in Russell's 1884 catalog-

After carrying the knives I have found the large Barlow is my favorite . I carry it with me for every day use . It works for peeling an apple to all around utility work . Hope to use it for cleaning squirrels this fall . I like to use them in pot pies .

The wife and I went to the Arabia museum in KC while at the NCOWS convention.  Too much to see in one afternoon.  It is a great time capsule of things from the front edge of the period we all try to portray.
