Did you all see the full-size Colt SAA with the 7 1/2" barrel with the Thunderer grip on it?  It says that California Mountain Man William Crapo ordered 4 of these in 1878 from Colt!  I guess we'll all have to rethink the historical accuracy of Cimarron's full-size Thunderer!  I guess it's historically accurate after all!  Wow!

I wonder if the birdshead grip was from the 1878 New Army grip frame?  Has anyone tried this swap ???

Sir Charles, the 1878 had a one-piece frame, if I remember correctly.  There was no grip frame to speak of, as on the Model P.  So it would take a lot of "cutting" to make this work.

Thanks for the info.  My 1878 hasn't arrived yet.

Now this could serve as the basis of an interesting cartridge conversion. It would make a nice custom project for my Uberti Walker.

It also has a very interesting looking ejector assembly.

Take note of the angle of the ejector in that second pic.
In order for the ejector to line up with the loading trough it either mounts below the barrel far enough to leave a gap or it is mounted at this "odd" angle. This is because of the very large chamber circle of the 1847/1848 revolvers.

I noticed that the ejector does have a canted look to it, noticeably off, from the lines of the gun. I wish we could see a few up close photos of the ejector, shown from a few different angles. How it mounts, etc.

Unless you were really trying to replicate this design, I suppose it would make more sense to do something like discussed in this other thread.http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php/topic,46066.0.html
