howdy yall,
i'm getting ready to make some orders for reloading supplies for my 45-75 model '76 chaperral.
i was looking on buffalo arms and seen that there is a die specifically for uberti model 76's. is there a difference in the modern 45-75 compared to the original?
i have ordered a lyman 457192 mould so that is the bullet i'll be using. i plan to order some jamison brass. i was considering getting the lyman 45-75 mould on buffalo arms, but seen the one for the uberti and didn't know if there was a difference in old and new. i would rather have the lyman, but it also said it was designed for straight walled 45-75 cases. i thought they was bottle neck.

i paste and copied this from the lyman die write up on buffalo arms

This is a Lyman Classic Caliber 3 Die Set for firearms chambered in 45-75 Winchester. Lyman recommends this 3 die set for the straight walled 45-75 Winchester cases which consists of a full length resizing die with decapping stem, a two step neck expanding "M" die and a bullet seating die. Uses shell holders 4D #57, Lyman #22 or RCBS #50BASICSH.

The .45/75 for the '76 is a bottle necked case. There were a bunch of .45 rifle cartridges but I've never read of a .45/75 Straight Case.

There is a definite difference between the Uberti chamber and the original chamber.  the Uberti chamber is larger incapacity than the original.  How do I know?  My rifle is an earlier Uberti and has the larger chamber which I like.  My dies are both Lee and RCBS and are for that larger chamber. The only way to really tell is to either take a chamber cast or fire-form a case and compare it to an original which will tell you the same thing.  As far as I am concerned, I like the larger chamber because of the increased powder capacity which allows me to shoot 76 grains of Swiss 1½ BP which is load and fun and pretty accurate but, in any case, these are the dies that I use along with the RCBS Trim and File die that is for the Uberti chamber as upon request from me to them.  Hope this helps some.

Used to be Uberti used a different 'standard' for cutting their chambers on the .45-75 1876.  My understanding is that since about this time last year they have switched over to using the SAAMI standard, same as everyone else.

Chaparral has always used the SAAMI standard.  So use the non-Uberti version of the dies.

.45-60, .45-70, .45-90, .45-110, etc. are all straight walled cases.  The .45-75 has always been a necked case.  The .45-75 was designed by winchester to  give .45-70 ballistics in the 1876 in spite of the action being too short to handle the .45-70.

FYI, The link below is one of many topic threads that discussed the issue with Ubertis.

The Sharps Rifle Company added a .45-75 Sharps Straight cartridge to their product line in 1876.  This was nothing more than a .45-Gov't case with 75 grains of powder and a heavy paper patch bullet.  This die set is certainly not for that cartridge.  Unless they made a mistake in the description, I think they should make it clear that these dies are for the .45-75 WCF.  I don't know where the straight wall case idea came from.  It almost sounds like they are telling folks they can make a .45-75 bottle neck case from existing .45-70 brass by using this die set.  That can not be done.

Buck is right. There ain't now way in hell a 45-75 case can be made out of a 45-70 case.  You can make 45-60 cases out of 45-70 cases till the cows come home but not 45-75's.  Use 348 cases or 50-90 cases and fire-form them or use Jamison brass which is very reasonably price or if you want to splurge get some Bertram brass but that is your choice.
