Nobody in Western Colorado?!?
« on: June 05, 2011, 02:02:25 AM »
After moving to a small town (pop. less than 1,000) in Western Colorado, I'm pretty far from my Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma, Nevada, AND California gunfighters.
Is there ANYONE near Grand Junction who is enough into Western History...no NCOWS?
The feds don't allow me much per month to live on, but I'd be happy for even anything to ATTEND!
I AM into the Living History aspect of our sport (with a family tree to go with it).

There used to be a fairly large mountain man/fur trade culture in the area.  I lived on the east side of the hill for about 15 years in a little town called Ordway.  A friend that I worked with was from the Hotchkiss area.  His name was Barney and he regaled me with stories of riding the irragation canal in the area back when most folks ditch riders were horse back instead of pick up truck mounted.  This is a small world.  Good luck on your search.  When I lived in the area I did living history at Bents Old Fort.  When you get into the sparcely populated areas of southern Colorado, 400 miles to something you want to do is not a big deal.

Capt. Billy,

There is a SASS group in Hotchkiss that shoots out there a few miles toward Austin at Stengel's and if I remember correctly his ailas is Double Bit and the Ruffian Outlaw Gang goes by "The Black Canyon Ghost Riders".

They write their stages around local history.... Super Fun!

Reverend,
I've been watching for signs at Stengel's (I can see the range from my place, but have as yet to find anyone ever there).
I've got Double Bit's #...guess I'll have to come out of my cave and make some calls.
Thanks!

I am down in Pagosa Springs but get up to Montrose, Delta & GJ farily often. Dad is building a house up Leroux Creek outside Hotchkiss. I have ended up doing Cowboy Fast Draw because there is a club in town, and you can practice in your garage.

There are several SASS clubs around in Durango and Cortez but I haven't done anything but watch.  I only have a pistol and the short distances an lack of movement haven't interested me enough to get the rest of guns.  The history side NCOWS makes it appeal to me more than SASS. I guess what I am saying is I would be interested in trying to get something going on this side of the state.

There isn't any sort of range in Pagosa. I've shot one action pistol shoot a Stengel's, it is a nice range. They can shoot 1000 yards there.

JC?
Next week in Montrose, there is a gathering of sorts in their "old West town".
With James Drury and other cast members of the Virginian TV show.
I plan on being on of the starstruck attendees.

Tribute to Western Movies Day
June 18, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM @ Museum of the Mountain West

Looks interesting, I'll have to pass though that is the day of our local CFDA shoot.  We are setting up at the Fred Harman Art Museum that day.
