I broke out my dremel yesterday.  Two hours and 3 1/2 sanding drums later I had a cartridge gun. :)

I think I will go back and flare the opening alittle more,  but it fits.

Now the young lad has met his grandpa.

It has a lot of sharp edges on the trigger guard, the loading gate and grips, so I think I will tinker on that next.

Whilst your piddlin,  consider cutting the barrel (again) to the same length as the ejector assembly.  You'll be amazed at the "balance."

My next one, a 1851, will be cut to the ejector.  :) These are addictive.

I'm just loving my Colt 1860 (Pieta) Kirst conversions.

I'm selling the Howell cylinders from my 1858, and these will get gated conversions also.

Next will be the ejectors.

And Cowboy45 brass is wonderful in these revolvers.

Here is the finished product.  Hoof Hearted installed the front sight, slicked it up and blued the machined areas.  Paul at Red Dog Leather made the holster for it.  Do to time constraints, its very first shot was during my very first match!  It's point of aim is sweet.

@Tornado, Very nice, especially the pictures, I am kind of afraid of starting to dive in on my new army's but you are inspiring me. One note on the tape though, I often have to work around very fine, old, or detailed woods and have to tape them as in one of your pictures for protection. I have found no matter how mild the tape says it is, if the wood is not available for replacement it will ruin it. For a piece like gun grips, I wrap it first in saran wrap first then back with blue tape. the saran wrap never damages the finish, and actually holds as good as a medium tape.
Thanks again for the photos, the detail in yours is incredible.

That's a good tip.  Make sure you wrap as much as you can.  The dremel got away from me only one time and of course found the metal I had unprotected.  It got the upper edge of the loading port and jumped onto the hammer.  The metal above the port was thankfully an area that was going to be ground away and I sanded the hammer as best as I could and Hoof touched up that area.

This is a thread is worth getting a little bump. Nice work on that cartridge conversion...one of the many projects I also still have on my "to do list" of conversions.

My lovely wife got me an .44 1851 for Father's Day!  So I finally was able to get rid of the huge army grips in exchange for the smaller navy grips!  The '51 will give me some spare parts too.
