Help - Naval Scene on 1860 Colt
« on: July 23, 2010, 05:13:38 AM »
Hello to the campfire: I ask for help from the initiates & Colt collectors. Are original (1st gen) Colt M 1860 C&B pistols known with plain, rebated cylinders, i. e. without the Ormsby naval scene?
Thanks.

Original Colt Model 1860 Armys all have the Ormsby Naval scene.

However - over time, and too much enthusiastic cleaning - that scene may be washed out.

Look carefully though - you should see vestiges of it, unless someone 'cleaned it up' with a buffer.

The only 1860 or 1851 Colts without the naval scene would be the fluted cylinders, which can't be rolled.

The 'Naval Engagement Scene' commemorates the victory of the Texas Navy over the Mexican Navy in 1843.

It's the first engagement in which Paterson Colt revolvers were used - so was also Colt's way of commemorating that happy fact, and cementing his ties both to military success and to the U.S. Government as a marketing tool.

'Army' caliber was considered to be .44 - while 'Navy' was .36.

Paladin UK, is that ring a primer conversion for your cap & ball?  In the light of the British cartridge ban, I presume the 1860 you show is still cap & ball.

Paladin, nice work.  Did you make it or is it a common conversion over there?  If someone coming to Bordertown could bring one, even just the cylinder, it would be interesting to inspect.

Fer Flint.........

Ho pard, I made it meownself I started off with sp primers in converted nipples, werked well BUT took a Loooong time ta reload. Dont matter much at a match but when you wanna put a lotta lead downrange it became annoyingly slow and that is when the ole light went on upstairs `n` I came up with this!!

Remains totally legal here in the UK as it is still able to use caps. just by puttin nipples back in!! The cylinder looks a lot like the ASM Cattleman!!

So the primer pockets screw into the nipple threads...  They also retain the ring?  The firing pin ring requires removing material from the cylinder between the nipples (the well) and modifying the hammer nose to the position of the firing pin..  or is the firing pin face where the top of the nipple cone used to be?

I think the ATF outlawed converting to primers in the USA except on rifles and shotguns, but I'm not sure.

Nice device.  It is loose enough to eject the fired primers by gravity or do you have to remove the barrel and cylinder?

Fer Flint.......
You are correct in that I remove the material betwixt the nipples and modify the hammer (Tig weld and reface flat), The primers ..... I was concerned about the possibilty of rebound strike of the primers soooo they are a very firm fit I`ll post piccies of the tools I made when I get a chance. I`m going into Hospital on Tuesday to have one of my hips replaced. So things are a bit `hectic` at the moment If I dont manage to post before,  I will when I settle at home after the `op` (Bout 7-10 days)  ;)
