Kiowa Buffalo Scrotum Canteen Circa: 1880

Small canteen for holding tobacco, peyote, or other necessity, made from buffalo scrotum rawhide. Very early - circa 1880. Twisted sinew strap is detached at one end, but original to the piece. Rare. 3" by 2.5".

Thats what my scrotum looked like after sitting in the saddle for six days in 108 degree Kansas weather ;D ;D

Um, no ... not salty, either.   Actually, I personally have never been so thirsty to need to use one of these.  But a canteen of any sort would be useful in some instances.   During my time in the desert, I carried 2, one qt. canteens on my belt PLUs a 2 qt. bladder canteen over my shoulder.  And they got refilled 2 or 3 times daily.  You can bet I'd have used one of these "sack" canteens if that's all I'd had!~

Whoever made this originally would have had to have some real huevos .... *G*
My moniker is my great grandfather's name. He served with the 2nd Florida Mounted Regiment in the Civil War. Afterward, he came home, packed his wife into a wagon, and was one of the first NorteAmericanos on the Frio River southwest of San Antonio ..... Kinda where present day Dilley is ...
