Horsedrawn Stretcher

Interesting pic ... in the movie 'Wonderful Country', the calvalry commander was carried home in exactly the same rig ....

Indian scouts tended to wonder when the army used such a rig why they didn't use a travois instead which was more comfortable to the wounded man.  There was an officer who was baddly wounded at the Rosebud who got tossed out of such a rig, his name escapes me for the moment.

Because that would be too simple, work too well, and consume less resources.

A combat ready unit will never survive inspection.

Captain Guy Henry was the name of that officer that was wounded at the Rosebud battle and then dumped off later by one of those mule stretchers.

The wound might be survivable...but the transportation from the battlefield could finish you off... :o

I just got a book written by our very own Dr. Bob (Dorian) about diseases and their treatment during the Mexican War.  This was in 1846-1848.  Judging by what I read I'd take my chances on just about anything but the medicines,  instruments, and techniques used in those days.  From this thread I'd add the transportation of injured and ill into that list.

I figure if I'd been born in the 1840s instead of the 1940s I would have died when I was about six from tonsillitis or a couple of year later from ear infection sor kid injuries
