TINTYPE OF A COWBOY AND HIS RARE WHITNEY RIFLE

Tintype of a cowboy holding a rare Whitney lever action rifle. The cowboy is also armed with a Colt m1878 DA with lanyard ring in butt. Circa. 1875-1880.

Interesting, his gun is butt forward on the right side.  Wonder if he's left handed or just prefers the butt forward on the strong side.  Or of course he may be just using what the photgrapher had.  So many pictures, so many unanswered questions.

From looking at his vest pocket and buttons the pic. it looks like it could be reversed. Why does it seem a inordinate amount of old pic's are reversed?

You are right, I just glanced real quick and thought it wasn't.  Tin Types and the earlier methods always were.  But often glass plate negative pictures are to.  I'd guess careless photographers and how easy it was to flop the plate the wrong way when they printed the picture.

It would be my guess that he isn't a "cowboy" either.  Too old and well dressed ;)

He is sporting a fancy set of "mutton chop" whiskers though.

My guess is that this fellow is what we used to call a "townie," a person who lives in town, dressing as a cowboy does.

Weren't most tin type images printed reversed?

I'd have to believe that there were a lot of old  former Cowboys around. My Great Grandfather was a Cowboy while young but died a Farmer.

Nice picture though.  I just aquired a redone Whitney Kennedy just like that one, but with a full octagon barrel.  This weekend we were doing photos for our S.A.W.W.S. website.  So I posed with the Kennedy, stuck my Uberti Russian in my waistband, and struck a pose just like that.

I'd like to see Uberti make some Whitney rifles. Since they're making the Burgess clone, it would be an interesting addition to anyone's collection.
