Looks to be a typical cowboy to me.  Check ot the chaps. and the fancy riggins on the horse.  I'm not sure he would like to be called a farmer ;D

I agree with you Will.  Reminds me of that picture in the Butcher Collection of the guy branding a calf that's wearing lace up work boots and bib overalls.  The giveaway in that one is the horse and rigging.  And that guy don't even have chaps on. ;)

I assume you mean the guy in the Butcher photo because this guy definitely has chaps on!   ;)

I agree with you fellas....that man has cowboy written all over him. The chaps were the thing
that made me scratch my head and say farmer???  ;D No way. But I posted the description that
accompanied the photo anyway!!

Bill

The date on the picture is 1887,my friend Roger Blomquist of Deseret Saddlery ( http://www.deseretsaddlery.com/aboutus.htm  ) said he thinks the date is correct, but the saddle could not have been more than a year or so old, as that was the latest style out of the Cheyenne area and hadn't caght on much at that time and I believe he said there was only one maker of it at the time that he knew of.  (It's been several years ago we talked about it.)  Since he wrote his Masters of the Cheyenne style saddle I'd guess he's right and as you dated it, was when they really started to show up in quanity.

Butcher scratched what may be the ranch brand on the horse, I need to see sometime if I can figure out who it was.

1887 and the overalls have a left rear pocket.  Although it doesn't appear to match the other one.

You know Del, I never really looked at that picture.  For some reason I thought that was a sheep and he was a sheep herder! :-[

I shouldn't admit that I guess.  Oh well I'm amongst friends....well mostly.

According to the Carhartt rep, theirs from the time they started in 1889 had two rear pockets and a pliers pocket.  Tis funny sometimes what shows up.  I hope someday they can rescan the Butcher collection.  Most of the CW photos from negatives in the American Memory collection are now scanned in at close to 200 meg.  Ain't figured out how to down-load them and work with them yet, but will.

It's OK Will, see he don't look like our image of a cowboy.

Now this guy I'm sure is a sheep herder:

What about the snaffle bit and the iron ring stirrups?

The snaffle bit come here from your countrymen, we have adapted it to the western horse back during the civial unrest of this country or even sooner. Now the iron ring stirrups caught my eye and the sursingle(spel?) type martingale he has on that horse.

Yep them cowboys tended to be a bit young back then.  I'd bet the saddle is older than this one:
