An Oddball for show and tell
« on: February 03, 2010, 09:06:32 PM »
This one is modeled on a Walker prototype.
The frame and hammer is Bone Colorcased, Barrel Cylinder and Trigger Guard are Charcoal blued and the small parts are Fire blued.
Grips are Walnut. The mahogany case is modeled on a Paterson case. the wood in this case spent most of the last 150 years at the bottom of a river. All the work was done in my shop and my wife hand dyed the velvet for the case.
If your opponent is still standing after firing all six shots you can always use the pistol as a club - it ways a ton!

We can probably build you a box for just about anything.
Are you sure you want to know what it will set you back?  :o

That sure is purdy!  Just out of curiosity, what do you use for a loading lever?

In practice, the original Patterson's would have most likely been loaded by ramming the ball home with the Arbor (after removing the barrel & cylinder). There was a loading tool specifically for the job (again, used after removal of the cylinder).....this tool slipped into the arbor's wedge slot & resembled a standard loading lever as we are used to seeing on the latter guns.

I've seen several original cased Pattersons sold at auction...don't recall seeing a loading tool with them.

The original Walker prototype barrel was cut for a loading lever and has the screw to locate it but has no lever.
We did the same to be true to the original.
A Walker loading lever can be attached.

Slim
If you have the oportunity check out The Paterson Colt Book by R.L. Wilson.
Most of the guns featured in this book come from the Dennis LeVett collection and most of the cased sets include the loading lever you discribed. Dennis has the largest private collection of Patersons.
Dennis has been gracious enough to loan me many of his guns and cased sets to use as paterns for my reproductions and the case for the Walker prototype was based on an original Paterson case.

Hello Raven. I'd wonder why the barrel of that gun is st back on the frame like it is? Maybe to reduce weight by shortening the cylinder?
The barrel configuration is an artful way to eliminate weight?
That barrel shape would look good on a converted Walker with an R&D or the Kirst Konverter.
I never did get the question answered about the charcoal blue that I might have you do on one of my Belgian Centaures. Slow rust blue? Express rust blue? Form of niter blue? Some form of hot caustic salts blue? It's nice to know basically what is being done to yer gun. Know what I mean?
I was hoping to the blue in the black but the camera doesn't show it. Can you give a pic og that Walker that shows the blue.
I've seen some guns that show blue in the black or are plain blue actually and the finish seems to be caustic salts bluing. I've seen it on Browning Shotguns and AWA's SAA revolvers and   Traditions  "blue and Ivory" 1860 Army sold at Traditions and made by Pietta. Those guns are plain arse blue.
Anyway that's a really nice gun and the Bone Charcoal hardening on the frame really shows it off. The Charcoal Blue does too but I bet it looks even nicer in person seeing with the "eyes" instead of the "camera".
have you weighed the gun to compare the weight to a percussion revolver in full dress?
I imagine you could make a loading tool for, that Walker that copies the paterson right?
I'd wonder what that gun would cost to buy? Is it for sale?

Fantastic work.  That's real workmanship.  I am currently building a walnut box for my Pedersoli Charles Moore Flintlock Dueling pistols.  I hope it turns out even close. :)

Paladin, the cutout is for the belt of disintegrating links. Belt fed.  ;D :D ;)

IMO, it was probably an early attempt at making a trough for spent cap fragments. Just a guess.

Hey Everyone,

Rifle,
We tried our best to reproduce the Walker Prototype as it is. So, thats the reason the barrel is set back toward the cylinder. It is HEAVY!!! which is the reason the Walker barrel is turned round. The barrel, cylinder, trigger guard and grip straps are charcoal blued and the color is very close to the color in the close up photos. The cylinder is of a slightly darker color which is due to the alloy it's made of.

Paladin,
The cutout in the frame was designed to clear fired caps from the revolver and was a carry over from the Paterson and was not used in later Colts.

That is a great looking gun.

The case and gun are just mouth watering to look at.

Keep up the good work. Wish it was mine.
