Many thanks for the kind words Pards.

Tw,
Attached is a link to the Corian website. It shows a color chart.

I found this material by accident. My friend pulled this piece out of his scrap.

Johnny:

Don Collins does a lot of work with Corian for pistol grips.  He's got some great samples on his web site:  http://www.collinscraftgrips.com/.  I've even seen some folks scrimshaw on Corian.

Howdy Pancho,

Thank you for the link. That sure is beautiful work that Mr. Collins puts out.

Joe
I have spoken to them about answering the phone. I am sure they miss alot of business that way, but they are a small crew and will return your call soon.

Their prices and material is worth the wait..

curley

Thanks Curley, they called me back yesterday afternoon.  I was looking for a set of Ivory Subsitute for a USFA but the grips they currently have will not fit.  They really have some neat stuff and priced well.

I just finished a set of Corian Grips for my Richards Transition. These are far from perfect but this set will be usable for now. Again, please excuse my photography. When you look at the actual grips they have more of an "yellowish off-white" caste.

I located a site on the internet that sells a product called 'Faux Bone' it appears to be a polymer, they sell it in sheets up to 1/2 inch thick, can be heated and shaped and is priced right. It might be interesting to try. Just type in 'faux bone' and search.

Went on the "Faux Bone" website and their material looks interesting. An 8" x 8" x 1/2" sheet costs $15.00 plus $8.00 for shipping. Has anybody seen or worked with this material? I'm going to try to get a sample.

I received a very nice Email from the Faux Bone website  http://www.fauxbone.com/index.html . They enclosed a set of instructions on how to work their material. They also are sending me a few samples to play with. I will post the results.

I think the Linear Paper Ivory Micarta is one of the closest looking substitutes because it has "grain" to it and real ivory has grain. Many of the polymers don't have that grain layers.

There is a material that knife makers suppliers sell called alternative ivory. It looks very close but is also very soft, not durable at all.

The linear paper Micarta also scrims great yet it is durable.

The inlay on this knife is ivory paper Micarta, I made it for my wife at Christmas a few years ago.

This one was a custom order

I'll be waiting too. I have been working with polymer clay, working in layers, haven't finished the first set of grips yet, not satisfied with the final composition. A bit soft and flexible, but does look good. Just thinking though, the black might make a good hard rubber substitute. I'm using the Sculpy clay.

I've received some sample material and I'm in the process of trying it out. The sample material is small so I'm making a miniature grip and a tooth out of it. So far this material seems to saw and carve easily. I'll post pictures as soon as I finish.

I have used Gripmaker several times and have been extremely happy.  Larry Little will sell them for you to fit or if you want him to fit them he will do that.  His Grips have the appearance of real Ivory or there are ways you can age or change the color.  He also has Ivory with Eagles, Stars and other designs.  In addition he has stag and bone.

He just finished a job for me on a modified 1851.

Here's a set if grips I'm making using Sculpey polymer clay. They aren't done yet, but you get the idea of how they are turning out.
