Spot Setters

Ace's Hollywood rig thread prompted a question about spot setters. I bought the Tandy set some time ago, and I don't think they work real well. I've read comments about Standard Rivet Co's spot setters, but I don't know what's different about them.

With the Tandy setter, correct me if I'm wrong, you have to punch some starter holes first, then use the setter to put the spot in and tap it down. Do you have to do the same thing with Standard's setter? If so, what is the advantage?

JD, the Standard Rivet Co. Spot Setter, holds the spot while you set it, you insert the spot, place it where you want it . and then just lightly tap it in, it's best to have the spot up in the barrel so there is less stress on the tines.

I think the Tandy spot setter is supposed to hold the spots as well, but they don't seem to hold them very well, as least in my limited experience. I assume you still need to pre-punch the leather first.

Howdy JD,
I am sure that the Standard rivet setter is better than the tandy! Since I make my own chisel I make them a hair undersize of the spots, and I poke all the way threw the leather, I take the spots and as I get ready to put them in, I  just push the prongs a little inwards and I have great luck!

The Piece serrets are the quickest and easiest to use and work just like the press mounted spot setters.  They consist of a punch inside of a tube.  Push the spot completely up into the tube bottom, points down, and then drive the spot where you want it by tapping the punch pin.  A different size setter is required for each size spot and they need to fit pretty well to support the spots prongs snuggly.  As usual, one of Chucks videos does a pretty good job of showing spot setting with the different methods.

I took another look at Chuck's DVD, and the setter he uses is the same type that Tandy sells. His may come from Standard Rivet Co. He makes it look easy. I'm sure his years of experience setting spots is a factor. Heck, he makes everything look easy!
