Don't call it a wild rag for one.  Cotton or silk, make it close to 36"X36".

Wild Rag?    I've always valled them Bandanas or Neckerchiefs, that always sounded more PC. I like the solid colors best. They keep the dust out of your mouth and nose and keep the cold from coming down your neck in the winter.

Never heard the term Wild Rag till the late 1990's, someone on CMT must have called them that.

I've always heard 'em called bandanas till recently, in some of the CAS-related sites.

Cotton is probably the cheapest to start out especially if you or your wife is handy with a sewing machine. 2ft to 3 ft square for size.

Wyoming Traders who are the largest suppliers of silk bandannas still call them silk scarves.

For my Bandanna's I go to Joanne Fabrics for the material. A yard usually costs around $5.00 to $6.00. A local Tailor sews the hems on for me. I try to select material that has the same appearance on both sides of the fabric.

Regarding bargain shopping:

I buy a large chunk of my cowboy attire on eBay.  Lots of folks don't liket to to business with them, but I look at the place like a big garage sale.  I've found hats, bandanas, shirts, pants, boots, spurs, pocket watch . . . you name it, for a WHOLE lot less than you find at the big retailers.  Last fall I bought two gently used Wah shirts for $21 shipped.  The same two shirts would've cost me $50 each new.

Do a few searches for "SASS shirt" or NCOWS hat" and you'll find used stuff that is usually being sold by a fellow CAS pard.

Also, check the "bargain bin" at some of the big retailers.  Tonto Rim and Wild West Mercantile both have "bargain bins" where they sell "last years style" at a discount.  (I'm not sure how "last years style" is an issue when we are dressing in 130 year old styles.)

The first I heard them called wild rags was when I was selling cow feed and doing a little horseback work on the side in the late 1970's or early 80's.  The department store in Fowler, Colo sold them using that name.  I think the term came from the buckaroo crowd out of Nevada about that time.  Whatever they choose to call them they are really handy like Texas Law Dog said.

I stopped by Joann's last night but didn't see anything that struck my fancy.

I hadn't thought about ebay, but that makes sense. Funny thing is that I'm the one who told my wife about it way back when, but I've never used it (not even for just looking). She does, though. <grin>

By the way, is "Wah" a brand or a style? I've heard several people use the phrase.

Yep and you can also tie one over yer head like Grandma always did and it will keep yer ears warm, plus it is thin enough to still wear a proper hat.

We don't see them in old pictures, but the bandanna like a pirate was most likey fairly common.  We do know that Major Reno tossed his hat after Bloody Knife's brains got splattered all over in in the bottoms.  Accounts say he tied a bandanna around his head.

I do it myself from time to time, a photgrapher for the Omaha Paper caught me at it in 2001.



Also caught me with just one dutch oven going, but it was only mid morning.

Major 2, based on the file-size, it *is* a small graphic. It looks like you might have copied a thumbnail instead of the full sized version.

That looks like something that may have been taken from a movie about the Alamo but I can't tell for sure. I'd love to see the full-sized one.
