Rowdy, EMF puts out a copy of the Texas Ranger Trapdoor Carbine. It was the conversion to centerfire bullets in 45/70. The real ones Texas bought them and issued them to the Rangers. Is that the one you have? At any rate would love to shoot it, any chance you can bring it to a shoot and let some of us try it? Tj  ???

Got a chance to fire a few rounds of black . 10 to be exact . It fired no problem and the ammo was great , the carbine loads are sweet . I was out of ammo and my shoulder wasn't sore . I like this , tomorrow I will take more ammo and start setting targets out and see what we can do . This was fun to shoot and the trigger was excellent .

I don't have the carbine made by Pedersoli, but I do have their infantry rifle. I rate that as one of my most fun guns. I do have a couple of cut down carbines that I did on older trapdoors, and they rate right in their too. I'm sure the Pedersoli carbine is every bit as good as their rifles, so have a ball Rowdy! I do download my carbine cartridges to about 60 gr. over a 405 or 500 gr slug - very sweet and lots of punch.

It is amazing the degree of variance in power (and recoil!) you can obtain with the 45/70 cartridge - depending on the rifle you are using. Quite a versitile round. But the trapdoors are one of the most enjoyable BP guns I've ever shot.   ;)

Rowdy: Your video was really great. I think that you have a future on the outdoor channel! You even have that strange dialect used by all those brass pro's down perfectly. You must have been practicing that all your life.  ;D

PS: You mentioned Custer, you need to do an historical follow up where you are shown attempting to pry a stuck case out of the chamber with your knife as a hostile sweeps in and counts coup!!!! No, no..., a scalping would be even cooler. :o

Because the Carbine was for issue to Cavalry Troopers, the Army issued them a down loaded round, a 405 gr bullet over 55 to 60 gr of BP.

It was the age of repeaters, Texas Rangers traded or sold off the Trapdoors as soon as they could and bought the new '73.
I think McNelly's Rangers were actually issued .50-70 Carbines. Fighting from horseback they have distinct limitations.

Shotgun Franklin, think the Rangers had to buy the 73's with their own money, which was a lot for them. However many went ahead and bought them. In a fight with the Comanches Jim Gillett and Ed Seiker put their 73's to good use. It was one of the stages at the NCOWS National 09 at Evansville, IN this year. Think most went with the carbine, but some bought the rifle. Tj

Shotgun
The US had a trapdoor carbine load which used a 405 grain bullet over 55 grains of black . The rifle load started out with a 405 grain bullet over 70 grains of black and in the 1880's they changed to a heavier bullet a 500 grain I think . The carbine loads had a c on the head stamp and the rifle ammo had a r on the head stamp . I don't think I would want to shoot a 500 grain bullet in a trapdoor carbine

Rowdy,

How much damage did those cartridges do to your steel targets.  What is the estimated velocity of those carbine loads.

About the time they switched to an external primer and a tougher case. After the Custer mess they had extensive reviews os the issue ammo and finally made some changes. Unfortunately they refused to give up on very outdated combat weapons.
