Pocket Pistol Carry
« on: January 30, 2009, 12:45:01 PM »
I recently came into possession of a very fine example of a S&W Safety Hammerless 3rd Model.  This has peaked my interest in pocket pistols.

Regarding carry:  I know pocket pistols were commonly carried in leather or silk lined vest or coat pockets.  Were any other carry methods commonly used? Belt Scabbards?  Boot holsters?

Any info on period correct carry would be appreciated.

Yes I know.  I caught that disease this summer when I picked up and old S & W at the Nationals.  Since then I have acquired four more.

Check out Packing Iron.  The are several pages on various contrivances to discreetly carry your pocket-pistol.

I have a belt holster and one of those niffty little devices that keeps the pistol up right in a coat pocket.
Marshall Dave Scott builds a fine shoulder holster. [I have one of those too.]

The book "Packing Iron" has a whole section on shoulder and pocket holsters. The pocket holsters very much resemble what is available today.  There are a couple that I might have duplicated.

The use of this type of pocket holster is the very reason that I have maintained that although it is true that off the shelf trousers might have only had a left hip pocket if a professional gun toter was having a pair tailor made he could have very easily had two hip pockets so he could carry a revolver in one.  When I have pants made for me I always have 2 pockets ;D
