Brass bead front sight ?
« on: December 31, 2008, 02:24:46 PM »
Is it acceptable to insatll a brass bead front sight on a 66 or 73 reproduction?  I do not mean a "Grabber"  large bead, but a conventional Marble brass bead front sight as on the Marlin.  Several of us Texas members have these installed.  Swapping out the short stroke kits, and other mods is not a problem but swapping sights between NCOWS and SASS matches is going to play heck on the dovetail.

Thanks,
Cole Bluesteele

Cole:

Not a problem.

Rifle front sights with brass or ivory beads were available in the period. You're OK with the traditional Marble's -type sight.

Another trick you might try is an old solid copper penny. Fellas on the Shiloh Sharps message board swear by this as the best metal sight for low light gathering. Remember, it needs to be a penny made before they debased the currency.  ;)

FCK:

Funny you should mention that. I recently replaced the front sight on my primary Laramie with an 1889 copper Indian Head.
So far, so good.

Joss:

I can do that....(but I'll have to take the pix first). I'll see what I can do this weekend.

Dave;

This project sounds like a great candidate for a Shade Tree Gunsmith article.

Books:

True. Sadly, however, I didn't document any of it with photos. :-[
