NCOWS legal shotshell holder?
« on: December 09, 2008, 06:25:01 PM »
Pards,

I'm new to NCOWS.  Question regarding shotshell retention:  I know the 2 shell "cups" we use for SASS are not NCOWS legal for securing shotshells on the body.

For stages that require shells retained on one's person, what sort of period correct shell holders are you fellas using?

Bandoleers?  Shell belts?  Any sort of slide on your rig?

I want to get a few opinions before a order up something.

Thanks,

Pancho

Shotgun slides are specifically PROHIBITED!  I see a lot of fellows use vest pockets or a belt pouch.  Also some shotgun belts.  I don't regularly shoot a shotgun [I shoot a 2 gun class] so I can't speak from experience.  I'm sure that others will give their preference.

Thanks Bob,

I've looked over the Tally Book & I can't find mention of web or canvas shotshell belts (as currently produced by El Paso Saddlery and others)?

Yes, you can wear & use a shotgun BELT but as Bob pointed out, not the slides. Most NCOWS members simply use a pocket to hold their shells as not to appear like Elmer Fudd.  ;D ;)

The Mills belt is popular with NCOWS shooters.  Also a leather shot shell belt like the ones pictured in "Packing Iron" work fine.  The biggest reason I don't like putting the shells in my vest pocket is because it is hard on the vest.  I have torn a couple of pockets this way.  Many stage writers have gone to having the shooters stage their shells.  This solves the problem.

Very nicely done belt there Josh.  When I do shoot shotgun I just use my vest pockets.  Works for me.  Plus I really never did like Elmer Fudd very much.

I dump the extras in a vest or sack coat pocket. I put them in any old way, I don't try to line up the rims or anything tricky. I try to imagine grabbin' a shotgun to go quell a ruckus. I think dropping rounds during a reload under fire and having to juggle the rims the right way to fit the chamber was all part of the stress involved.
