1851 conversions ... what to do with loading lever latch notch?

So, just what do most folks do with the loading lever latch on their Colts?


After I remove the loading lever, I still have the latch... what is the best way to hand it? How did original conversions deal with it?

Also, I figure I am going to need a taller front post. (plan on sticking in a length of brazing rod and cutting it to point of impact at 25 yards)

I think it is dovetailed, so just tap it out and form a blank insert.

Leave it in there.  Grind it down to barrel contour, polish, and cold blue.

I left loading lever and all - I think the pistol balances better with them still there.

That's what Colt did originally, however they rust blued afterwards.

That sounds like a simple enough idea...

I will dremel mine down a bit then draw file it the rest o the way.

Bluewonder does a good enough job w/o having to strip stuff down to bare metal.

I left mine on, and added an ejector rod as well.  I did return to the plowhandle grip, though, it works better on a short barrel.

      What kind of frame did you use on the grip ?   That look is just over the top its exactly what I have been looking for if I have your permission    to use it.
              how does it affect the feel of the piece, the balance , pointability .... etc.   give me some facts  please.....

The gripframe is from an Uberti made "Thunderer", available from VTIgunparts.com.  It screws on.  It is made a hair wide for fitting, but can be used as is if you aren't into reblueing the sides after shaving.

Call Lisa at VTI 860-435-8068.  The assembly of backstrp, triggerguard and wood comes compolete with a new butt screw to keep it together.

The Thunderer gripframe feels good and points well.  Don't get the "Lightning" grip, it is a full birdshead (no hump) and fits the 32 frame.

Dang ! Flint,  I like that too, it gives into an exotic look that takes the beauty of 51 art a step further.
 Sort of Steampunk or at least what I think Stearmpunk art is.
