IMR 4227
« on: March 22, 2008, 09:14:50 PM »
Before I got into the cowboy shooting, I shot a .44 mag.  One of my favorite loads used IMR 4227.  When I swiched to CAS, I traded the .44 for my current .45's.  I have about 2lbs of 4227 powder in the safe.  Does anyone know of a load for the .45 using this powder?  Havent been able to find anything yet.  Could also use it in the 12ga, but I have only seen data for the .410 bore scatterguns.  One of my co-workers shoots 44-40, would use it for him if I could find a load.  Guess what I'm saying is I really want to find a use for the powder as I dont want to toss it out. and most folks (cant blame em) dont want used powder.  If you have any loads you wouldnt mind sharing, I would appreciate it.

btw, shooting mostly 250gr in the 45's and I have about 1000 240gr swc in 44cal if it can be used for my pards irons,

Howdy,

Hodgdon, who owns IMR lists NO data for IMR 4227 for either 44-40 or 45 Colt.  I would NOT use it in either since the manufacture DOES NOT give loading data.

I have my best results in full-house 44 mag loads with IMR 4227. It's made for Magnum loads. Whatever it is, either fast burning or slow burning, it's the opposite of what you need for CAS. I'd gladly take it off your hands though, if we lived closer than 2000 miles. They're not keen on mailing that stuff.

What data is around for it in 45 Colt is Ruger only type.

Just buy a 22 Hornet, it will take a while to shoot it up, but you will enjoy it enough to buy 2 more pounds.   ;D

And yes for shotgun it is for 410 and there is a few loads for 3 inch mag 20 gauge.

Maybe I'll just have to find some loads I can use it in, and convince the wife I need another set or irons ..... don't want the powder to go to waste :)

If you have an 30-06, 308, 30-30 or other such rifle it also makes reduced velocity lead bullet loads. ;D  I'd go with the Hornet though, everybody should have a 22 Hornet, ya might get a call for help from somebody with a varmint that needs shot with out all the noise of a really hot varnmint rifle, you can do that for them.  A buddy borrowed mine one time to help a guy with some woodchucks in his garden.  He got 3 woodchucks and a 20 oz Porterhouse grilled the way he likes it.

Never seen a 22 hornet.  What do they go for?  Might have to check out the local sporting goods store next time i'm in.  Dont have a big budget, but always fun to have another rifle.  Only have a .22 and a .270 currently.  Of course, may have to look into another safe before long too.  Getting pretty full.

Ruger only loads for 4227 make for some nice loads on the order of what 2400 will do for ya in .45 Colt.  I've shot some very accurate 250s with it.  Nothin for SAAMI level .45 loads though, it's too slow.

Cheapest way out is one of the break action H&R, Ruger has it in their bolt gun they use for the 22Lr and I think still in the number one, if you have a Contender, just add another barrel.  Lots of older guns around, even Pre 64 Winchester 70's.  Factory ammo is 2650 fps with a 45 gr bullet.  Just plain cute and not much louder than a 22 LR and good on varmints to about 200 yards.

Look in the back of a Cartridges of the World book, the #8 edition has saami loads for the 45 colt.
Lyman's 48th reloading has saami spec loads using 4227.
Way back when Mike Venturino used to brag up a load of 4227 in the colt.
I went thru a couple of pounds of the stuff and never did get anything for exceptional accuracy in 2 different 45's.

It does do a fair job with cast bullets in rifle cartridges like the 30-30 and 45-70.

Howdy, Pards,
IMHO IMR4227 is too slow for pistol cartridges when loaded in CAS range bullet weights and velocities!  The powder is suitable for HEAVY loads in .44 Magnum with 240 gr. bullets or heavier.  Similarly, it might be okay in .454 Casulls or at least Ruger Blackhawk-strength .45 LC's.

The basic "rule" that if it isn't listed by the powder manufacturers/distributors, then DO NOT USE IT!

Ride careful, Pards!
