Puma 92 Question
« on: February 20, 2008, 08:04:05 PM »
I pulled apart my Legacy 1892 today and have a question.

When you take off the lower tube that holds the cartridges, the place the pin goes through ahead of the forearm is wearing a hole through the tube.  I figured either that or they had to drill the tube once it was in place to get the pin through.  Is this a known wear area with the 92's?  It  is possible they drilled this since I can tell they drilled the forearm holder after putting on the brass barrel band, the area was still full of metal shavings. And what a mess under there with all that grease.  Even with that "locomotive grease" underneath, the cartridge tube still had rust on it hidden under the forearm.  One reason I took it apart was to see if there really was wood under all that stain. It looked like they recycled motor oil into the stock.  Not a fan of "black guns" so I stripped it with solvent and steel wool, sanded it up and stained it.  the "Hundras hardwood" has a pretty nice grain to it, I will try to remember to post a pictures when i'm done putting on the clear coat.

Also, I have seen post where shooters replace the plastic cartridge follower with a metal one.  Why?

thanks!

Before (top to bottom Buffalo Classic, Goldenboy, Puma)

After

I wish it turned out darker, but the wood is real light.  Maybe I will do it again and shoot for a darker color, heck its fun work if you got the time.  I have around 10 hours into it.  Maybe next winter.

hOWDY wILL

I think you did a nice job, it looks just fine , is your reciever, and butt plate brass , or is that just a reflection , sometimes my case harden 92 , will reflect that way , but any who, were you trying to make the stock dark ? or just a shade darker, if your going to try this next winter, try testing on a small spot, ( take the butt plate off ) on the butt of the stock , I know there isn't a lot of room there but it will give you an idea, of how it might look , just do a little spot , because you might want to change your stain , and you will need some clean wood to test that also, you should be able to test at least four spots on the butt. hope this will be of some help to you for the next time , if you deside you can't live with it the way it is , but I think it looks real nice the way it is..... :D And by the way thats a nice collection of levers pard  8)

the receiver and butt plate are brass.  I know they never made this gun back in history, but I just got this thing for brass.

Not sure if you have the Puma from Legacy, but when you pull the butt plate off you ain't going to find any clean wood.  It will be black and covered with grease.  The stock almost looks like they dipped it in used Diesel motor oil.

I stripped it by using steel wool and some kind of solvent (can't recall the name right now, but its a type of paint thinner).  I had to do it several times to get the "darkness" and stickinesses out.  I think another reason they made it dark is to hide the burn marks from the dual blades on what ever cut the stock.  the picture does make it look lighter then it really is.  I had it out practicing today, anybody that I showed it to really liked it.

They do drill them. The plastic followers will get wear on them, and hang up.

I did the same thing with the stock and forearm on my Taurus Thunderbolt. I stripped the near-black creosote-looking finish off and replaced it with 5 coats of tung oil. Big improvement!
