When will Marlin make some new .357's in lever action?
« on: February 13, 2008, 11:49:25 PM »
I have been waitng months.  Months.  With Cowboy Action Shooting, it would seem there would be a demand for this kind of rifle.

What's with Marlin?  When will they get off their butts and make some of these?

I have a 1894C in .357 on backorder since Sept `07.  When I first ordered it, S.I.R. (which is owned by Cabelas and gets them direct from Marlin) said Marlin told them it would be end Dec or early Jan.

Just yesterday I received a letter from S.I.R. stating that it would be another 31+ days. :'( :'(

It may have something to do with them being bought by Remington.

I ordered an 1894CB for a customer last month.  It came in 3 days from my distributor.  I guess it depends on where you live and who you order from.

308's have been tough to get a hold of lately as well.  Seems they've focused on the 30-30 for the time being.  I have one an it's great, I'd love to add a 357 to the collection--that's what my pistol is chambered for.

I can't tell where you are from, but Jay's in Clare, Mi.(Northern Lower Penninsula) has 1 on the rack, has been there for a couple months.

They are good guys, a med.-large size place. You can google them. They are great to deal with. I was there this Monday putting another wad of cash on my Uberti '73 WIN in  .44 WCF! It will be here in a week! WOOOOHOOO!

Howdy

Yes, we heard this just about a month ago or so. Remington has announced they are buying Marlin and I think the deal is going through. None of us really knows how this will affect Cowboy gun production. Marlin was making their standard 336 30/30 lever guns for a long time before they resurrected the old 1894 design for Cowboy shooting. There is some speculation that Marlin may not be real interested in making a lot of Cowboy rifles anymore, there is speculation that their real bread an butter has always been hunters and most of them buy 30/30s or other more modern designs that the Cowboy guns. Completely unknown at this time what the future holds for Marlin and Cowboy rifles.
That’s bad business! How long do you think I’d stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he’d pay me that much to stop robbing him, I’d stop robbing him.

Here's another question--
I understand the SASS rules regarding rifles chambered for pistol rounds but is 30/30 not period correct?  I was always made to understand that it was.  I know .308 is not even in the ball park, but any history on 30/30 would be preciated.  I'll start another topic if that seems more appropriate.

Howdy

The 30/30 round was the first commercial Smokeless rifle round manufactured in the US. The 30-40 Krag is a little bit older, but it was a military round. The 30/30 was first developed for the Winchester Model 1894, although I believe the round was not actually commercially available until 1895. So that does put in the correct era for Cowboy shooting, albeit it at the tail end. The 30/30 was originally developed as a high velocity smokeless rifle round to take the place of older, slower Black Powder rifle rounds with rainbow trajectories like the 45-70. Not that the 30/30 is as powerful as the 45-70, but it is much flatter shooting.

The reason the 30/30 is not acceptable for SASS as a Main Match rifle round is that it is not a 'pistol' round, it is a longer, bottle necked rifle round, no conventional revolver could chamber it, and it is generally too powerful and would damage targets.

Thanks D.J.
I love my Marlin and I like to know as much about it and it's ammo as possible.  I'd love to get my hands on one of the .357s, not just so I could use it as a match rifle but also to compare it to the 30/30.  Never can have enough guns I guess.

Nope, ya can never have too many guns, as long as ya SHOOT them!

I know getting a NIB Marlin .357 is hard over here on the east coast.  We went to a gun show back in November or December just hoping to find one and got real lucky.  It was a nice christmas present!
