For those who aren't yet NCOWS members and don't get The Shootist,  here's a short excerpt from Major 2's outstanding article:

A plow share was tied around his neck; the vigilantes rowed him out to the middle of Lake Conway and tossed him in.  Mose, Jr. at once sank to the sandy bottom, but the lakes in these parts are shallow, and as the posse rowed for shore, he started to hop.  Breaking the surface, he’d gulp a quick breath, sink again, and walk a short way on the bottom.

The posse, now ashore, saw that his odd progress was about to carry him to the other side of the lake.  They mounted up, rode quickly around the lake, and as he surfaced, shot him to death.
