Capt. Jack McQuesten

I am new to SASS and am just getting my kit together. I was wondering what ya all are packing at these shoots. I have a brace of Ruger Vaqueros (one a Bisley Vaquero), both with 4-4/8" barrels. I also have an old Rossi Overland Coach gun (12ga). I am working on getting the money together to pick up a Cimarron model 73' in .44 special. I also just started getting my leather rig, I bought San Pedro Saddlery xdraw holster from another SASS shooter (Preacherman). I now need a strong side holster and belt to finish it off. What's in your holsters?

My main match guns are a matched pair of 75 Remingtons in .45 Colt with 7.5" barrels, a Rossi 92 short rifle in .45, and an ancient Crescent 12 bore SxS. I have others that I shoot once in a while, but these are my Babies! ;)

I've added a brace of 58 Remingtons recently and am going to try competing in Frontiersman this year, as time allows

I'm also getting my guns together.  I just ordered a pair of Stampede's in 45 colt and a EAA 12Ga with hammers.  I'm also looking at getting a 73 in 45 Colt if I happen to find one at the right price.

Capt. Jack McQuesten

I have a Winchester 94 in .44 mag that is "pre-safety", but has the "angle eject" feature. I figure I could use that for now, but they don't seem too popular from what I have read in the forums. That is why I am working towards a Cimarron 73' in .44 special. I wish somebody would make an iron frame Henry in .44 special. I am not really into the brass frames as they are way too shiney for my tastes and besides it gives away your position when you are playing hide N go seek (Good officer safety tip!).

Doc Shapiro

Just dropped in for a look and saw this post.  Thought I'd respond.

For pistols, I'm shootin a pair of 4 5/8 inch Ruger Vaquero's.  Blued, Eagle Gunfighter Grips, and a whole lot of custom work.

Rifle is a 20 inch '73, worked over by Cody Conager and the stock has been shortened an inch to better fit.

Got a mess of shotguns.  Usually shoot either an SKB Model 150 SxS with 26 inch tubes or a Winchester Model 97 with a 20 inch tube and chokes.  Also, but have had stocks shortened and recoil pads installed.

Qball

Well my Rossi .45 is still a little rough (only fired 500 rounds)
just one jam so far and i think that i shortstroked ???that.
255ggr boolits and full house black reduses the fouling to
a minimum, i run a damp patch down the barrel now and then. Accurate as a target rifle
Ive seen it  sell as .44mag so i'supose .44spl would work.

Kid,

I love my Rossi 92s,  I think they are the real workhorse of the leverguns in our game!I know they are chambered in 44 mag and 44 Special should work in one chambered thata way.

One of the facts of life concerning the "multiple chamberings" like .44 mag/44 Special and 357 mag/38 Special is that some guns don't handle the shorter catridges well out of the box. But most of them can be tuned to do so.

Somewhere in the CAS City Archives there used to be great article about how to tune the Rossi 92 that can be of use in tuning one that's a bit stubborn about handling cartridges.

Cuts,

Well that would make sense about using the shorter rounds. I guess that is why the Winchster 94's are not too popular as they have the long lever throw on top of all that. I think I need to check out the Rossi's, though I sure do love the look of the 73's.

Yeah! It's hard to beat the 73s or 66s for pure style! ;D

I found that article on dealing with 92s, it's here: http://www.cascity.com/cgi-bin/news/print.pl?article=10

Cuts,

Thanks for the article on the 92's. Is Rossi making them anymore? I checked their web site and all they had was single shot rifles. I did find a couple of Puma 92's in .44mag at www.gunsamerica.com that look pretty tempting. But damn, them 73's are still calling me!!!!!

Yup! They's still being made. Imported by EMF and a couple of other companies. If you want a really supurb Rossi, you should contact Nate Kiowa Jones (AKA Steve Young) of Rossi Specialists. www.stevesgunz.com

Steve will do an action job on your gun, or sell you a brand spankin new one with the action job already done. And Steve is the FINEST Rossi smith bar none!. What he does to a Rossi is simply magic! I've never owned one of his action jobs but have handled quite a few of them and I have always been impressed. And I've never met anyone who owns one his actions who didn't love it!

I do my own work on my Rossi lever guns and Steve has been really nice about giving me advise, and he sells spare parts for them too.

BTW, should you decide to do your own work on a Rossi, I don't recommend that you follow the instruction in the above artical anymore, when it comes to the springs. Instead, I recommend the Lee's Gunslinger Spring Kit to replace all the stock springs. It's available through Brownells. I've installed a couple of these kits and the owners were very happy with the results!

If you think it sounds like I'm a Rossi and Steve Young fan..yer right! ;D The Rossi is a good entry level gun and it is still seen in the hands of some top shooters too. Its a rugged little gun and FAST. They can be a bear to work on, but worth it! 8)

Capt. Jack McQuesten

Well Cuts,

I checked out the EMF 92's and it looks like they are only offering them in .45LC, .44-40 & .357. I really liked the look of the 20" octagon barrel model with the color case hardened frame.
I guess for now I might have to just stick with my .44mag 94 until I can get the coinage to pick up a Cimarron 73' in .44 spl.
Thanks for your help.

Cuts Crooked....I downloaded that articale on Rossi 92 dis-assembly and modifcations.  If your a hobbiest gunsmith like I am, that story has everything you need to know put  your levergun in top notch shape.  I too was a little leary about annealing and re-tempering the springs and really appriciate you making mention of the spring kits available from Brownell's.  Not to steal your fire but I'm going  to start a new thread on this so all are aware.  Besides, I haven't had anything new to post in awhile now!....Will Pluggum
