Remington 1866 revolving carbine
« on: April 06, 2007, 05:26:26 PM »
Howdy pards,
Anyone know if the Remington 1866 Revolving Carbine is allowed in the main stage shooting? They are so cute and would a good match for 1858 New Model Army pistols.

What do you think?

Yankee by birth, Texan by choice....

From the SASS Handbook v13 copyright 2007:
Quote
RIFLE REQUIREMENTS
Rifles or carbines used in the main and team matches must be original or replicas of lever
or slide action rifles manufactured during the period from approximately 1860 until 1899,
incorporating a tubular magazine and exposed hammer. Rifles with box magazines may not
be used. Certain shooting categories require a specific type of rifle and ammunition to be
used. Please see the shooting categories for further information

Nope, and since most stages require ten rounds and you can only load five in the Remington you would have a problem on every stage shot.

R.U.,
I was hoping the same thing when I started, that way I could shoot all C&B except the scattergun, I figured I would just swap cylinders in the revolving carbine. Anyhow it is probably better we can't, the one I have fired (Dad had one when I was about 10) sure seemed to blow a bunch of crap back in my face! It's a shame though, especially since my favorite western is "El Dorado!"

i agree i want to shoot one of those too. looks like if you had 2 cly it would be more BP correct than a moderen 1894 with BP in the shells

I thought the revolving rifle in El Dorado was the 1885 Colt-Root?

Too bad the Palmeto is built so poorly and so darn expensive.

Right you are, it is a Colt-Root. Like you say the only replica out there is expensive and I haven't heard really positive reviews of it. The Remington Revolving Carbines are as close as most of us will get to the Root, work pretty well, are fairly cheap, and would share cylinders with 1858 New Armys, not a bad combo if you aren't in a big hurry to finish a rifle stage!
