cas western hats
« on: March 13, 2007, 12:29:02 PM »
I am needing a new hat.  Have seen many people with the old style cowboy hats and I am needing info of where to find one.  Only I would like to find one reasonably priced (not $2 or 300.00 dollars if possible. Thanks New Salem Bob

NSB,

Try River Junction Trading Co. of McGregor, IA  They have a pretty complete line of hats that are well researched and moderately priced.

I wear a 'Gus' myself. A Charlie One Horse 10x tht is made like iron. I love this hat. Some say however, that the 'Gus' is a post 1900's hat. Myself, I dont know. I like mine, have  soaked it and 'modified' it a wee bi, but its still a "Gus.' You can go with a Gus, I 'think' however that NCOWS kinda frowns on the wearing of a  'Gus.' They are totally fine with SASS I gather.
Check River Junction,,,they have a loarge assortment of different styles layed out in a nice formatte.
I have a 'Pale Rider' hat comeing from 'Last Best West' (Longfellow) out of Calagry, Canada. The 'Pale Rider' is also a historic correct hat. I have word AND image docum that puts the Pale Rider at LEAST as early as 1858.

The hat id like to have now is the one like  Eastwood wore in Outlaw Josey Wales. River Junction has a 10x Josey Wales that is really nice. I cant quite afford another new quality hat right now, but perhaps some day. Also, a cavalry slouch, either Union or Confederate I think are quite nice and historic correct.

In the mean while, I have NO intentions of discarding my 'Gus.' That ol' hat has been with me for years, and hopefully will be with me for many more years.

Good luck in your search for your 'holy grail' in the hat world. It can be fun, it can be frustrating. But, real guys wear real hats. My brother once critized my wearing a 'cowboy' hat all the time, saying 'You aint no REAL cowboy.'  Well he wore a baseball cap and I asked him "What baseball team do YOU play for?'  Real men dont wear baseball caps. Baseball players were baseball caps.  Its tacky to have on a nice shirt, quality jeans, good pair of boots, and top it off with a 2.50 cent cap. Just aint right.
A mans hat tells a lot bout the man. Im worth more than 2.50 cents ,,,,I 'think'. :)
Check out 'Last Best West' and River Junction. Not saying they are the only chocies, but they do have good web sites and great visuals of different styles to look at.

The "pinch slope" hat often refered to as the Gus is an invention of Hollywood as this 1886 photo taken in Ansley Nebraska plainly shows. ::)

The amount of slope can vary.

NCOWS has NO problem with the Gus hat.  Several good photos exist of similar hats and many NCOWS member wear one.

Uh oh...here we go again...

Come on Del!  You know the "pinch" job was an accident at best and photoshopped at worst.  They just didn't do 'em like that back then...because...because...well, just, you know...because!   ;D

Maybe we should call it an Ed crease since Ed McGivern wore one. Matter of fact lots of early "B" western hats had the same crease.... :o

I got a couple of 4X beaver (one black one silver belly) from the Stetson Outlet store in St. Joseph.  I had them take the ridiculous leather thong hat band off and put a 1 1/2" silk ribbon on (much like the one in the photo).  I think these ran between $100 and $125 shipped.  I bought one the black one while I was there for about $80.  Then got home and figured my old Stetson Gus was wearing (it's had hard use on the farm and at SASS stuff, and just daily wear in the rain and dust etc) for the last 15 or 18 years.  The Silverbelly  one they sent was $125 with shipping I think. Pretty good Price.  I had Bronco Sue, in Ruidoso build me a custom hat, 10X, and I think that hat was $300.
