Cosmolene
« on: January 10, 2007, 01:06:45 PM »
Pards,
I just bought a Yugo '98 Mauser in near-mint condition, and it's still full of cosmolene. What's good to get rid of the gunky stuff?
Thanks in advance

Good ventilation and gasoline was how we degreased a lot of small arms.

Oven cleaner will work as well.

Kid,

I always had good luck with kerosene.  Works almost as well as gasoline and is less of a fire hazard.

Now where did I put that fuming nitric acid?

Does anyone smell smoke?

Best and cheapest is to get some cans probably 4 should do .96 cent carb cleaner from walmart it will take all the gunk off quick. I have restored several surplus guns. Also get some easy off oven cleaner and spray down the wood let it soak for about 5 mins and wash off with grarden hose repeat as needed. Once dry sand to your desire and restain. You will be amazed how the oven cleaner pulls the cosmolene out of the wood.

Mineral Spirts well work as good or better than gasoline or kerosene and is even less flamable.  This is the same thing that is often sold under the label "Wax and Grease Remover" for wiping down cars and such before painting.
