Gamey .45 "no filler" load fer pistolas
« on: August 01, 2006, 11:33:41 PM »
If ya absolutely, positively must shoot .45 BP "lites" there's only one sure fire way to do it.  Use Cowboy .45 Special cases, a 200 or 250 (200 being gamier), and around 15 to 17 grains of FFG.  No muss, no fuss, no wads, no fillers.  Makes the SASS smoke rule, shoots like a .38, but works in yer .45.  ;)

I did some .45 cases that way several years ago and called it the 45 BP Wimp.  I had a lot of fun with them and they shot fine.

Howdy Jack,

Great piece of brass.  You've made the needed modification of the "engine" end of the 45 Colt for our sport.  Before his untimely passing, El Paso Pete and I designed the DD/EPP 45-147 Ultimate Gamer bullet.  Now, thanks to your fine new case size, this could be the last word in low recoil 45 Colt ammo.  I'm thinkn' of bringing out a mold in Pete's honor.

Here is what it looks like, if my photo shows up.

Okay...but who on this page is a "gamer"?   I'm sure it will fit the bill nicely for those older gentlemen whose hands are weakened by arthritis and other debilitations.  I'm still good shootin' warthog for the next 10 -15 years, 'cept the weight of holdin' a pistol out at arms length does irritate my rotator cuff considerbly.
Any real gamers will have switched to 38 or 32 by now, so I don't know how well this will go over.

Same as the 45 acp Dave, just a 45 Aout Rim with the same size rim as the 45 Colt not the thick one of the 45 Auto Rim.

Howdy 44 Cal,

I'm thinkn' that AJ and I are looking at pards with big bore handguns that don't desire or can't shoot the piff ting guns and hold their heads high.  Also, there's lots of new shooters that might be enticed into our sport if they didn't have to shoot warthog boomers.  The reduced length brass is easier to load without fillers and the pip squeek round ball simulaters would do well with less powder.  I think it's a winner for the pard that wants less in a big bore.

For myself, it's big boomer warthog loads cuz I like the smoke and flames.

The "G" word is used tongue in cheek.  Hey, they time me with an hour glass with extra sand, BUT, I like my big irons, but there is no earthly NEED to boom that hard to clang a plate a few yards away (though when in the mood, I shoot full house 777/250 long colt loads just because I can).  As an RO, I sure appreciate NOT listening to em all day too.

There's probably 30,000 .45 colt owners in our sport, many of whom also end up owning and shooting .38s out of frustration in taming the colt and not having it get erratic, or not wanting to use fillers etc.

Dick, yer bullet looks interesting.  a pard was telling me about a real light .45 his bullet suppllier is gonna deliver to him today or tomorrow, and he says he ain't seen em yet, but was gonna send some along.  Might be real similar.  I can assure you I could load that 147 grainer to a mass X vellocity of around the same as many .38 loads, and keep em accurate.  It's about the lower case capacity keeping pressures up so ya get a good burn and obduration.

what is the site for the 45 short brass ... the wife wants me to load her some ... it would make it much easyer to keep our bullets apart .. her 44`s only have 20 grs of black and lots of card board .. but can`t tell`em apart from mine . she doesn`t like a 36 the lead is just too puney.

Colt brass is 1.285
Schofield is 1.109

Cowboy .45 Special is .895

So ya can see the advantage of the cowboy .45 special in terms of reduced case capacity is more than twice the advantage ya get by moving from colt brass to Schofields. (a loaded Cowboy .45 Special round is SHORTER than an empty .45 Colt case)

Thanks Mason,

I'm serious about it alright, but not ready to go yet.  Also, I don't want to hyjack AJs thread.  He's got a great product here and it is much needed.  So, I'll kick off the reduced recoil 45 Cal bullet as soon as I can free up another $1200 of capital to make it go.

Thanks for your vote of confidence.  I'll put you on the very top of the list.

Thanks fer the flowers, DD  :)

Things just got better for Marlin shooter.  I came up with a VERY simple way to add a catridge stop to a standard Marlin carrier which enables it to feed to short cases without "letting in two" and without going to a full-on "Short Stroked race gun" (which is very neat, Spur's short stroke is waaay cool,  but some shy away from the expense).

The cartridge stop method does NOT short stroke the gun or in any way change it's functional "personality" except it is set up to feed the short cases.  I plan on offering the carriers with a stop added, and will share the "how to" info with any smith that asks (email me).

Ho Sundance,

I'm thinkn' AJs offerin' new struck brass, not modified 45 Colt brass.  He can post the authoritave answer.  If ya made the short brass out of shortened 45 Colt brass, the neck would be too thick to obturate and prevent bp blowback.

Dick is correct.  As a "proof of concept" I actually did cut down a whole passle of brand new Starline brass and used em, and they worked OK, but they were kinda on the thick side, causing em to run rougher than a cob through the press and to squish bullets which caused leading issues.   Because straight walled cases are tapered on the inside, they get too thick in the new "mouth" area if ya cut em back a bunch.  The making of a proper short .45 case is something that was begging to be done, and the chopped down brass was not the whole answer, so I took the plunge and got it done right.  .I had to pay for drawing punches and a headstamp die, and for a mimimum run of 50,000 cases, but the results pards are getting say more than I can about it..

The Cowboy .45 Special brass we have now is brand new, properly drawn brass with the correct internal taper so the case mouth is of the right thickness to seat up to a 250 grain bullet without issues, and  properly headstamped "COWBOY .45 SPL" .  It is as if we took the unwanted MIDDLE out of .45 Colt and kept the mouth and case head.   This brass is made exclusively for Adirondack Jack's Trading Post by Starline, and is of the same high quality we have come to expect from them.
