How much ammo do you take to a match
« on: March 17, 2006, 09:38:11 AM »
This is in reply to Cyrille's question on another thread.  Feel free to jump in.

I usually count on at least 10 rounds for my rifle per stage and 10 rounds of pistol ammo per stage.  Then I throw in some extra in case there's a reload or something different and a few rounds in case I want to shoot a little after the match.  So minimum I would carry would be ten rounds rifle and pistol per stage + ten rounds pistol ammo per stage and then 10 more of each (what if you get a reshoot) and have a few in my belt.  Then I carry at least 6 rounds of shotgun ammo per stage.  That will pretty much average out.

We shoot 6 stages, which usually run about 110 rifle/pistol rounds and 30 shotgun rounds.

I bring triple of everything in case someone runs low or somebody new wants to shoot.

Extra on my person:  I have a 5 round pistol/rifle slide and two six round shotgun slides on me.  I shoot the double a lot and I grab, depending on the situation from both sides.

We usually shoot 5 or 6 stages.  So I bring 200 pistol/rifle cartridges and 50 shotshells.  Haven't run out yet.

We generally shoot 5 stages plus some kind of side match each month, so I take 200 rifle/pistol rounds, 75 shotgun shells, and 25 for the derringer.  Overkill, but never run out.

Usually I have 100 rounds of shotgun in my shooting box.  About 200 - 300 rounds of pistol/rifle loads.

When I can barely pick up the bag.. when the gun cart wheels are groaning.. then I have enough.. ;)

Seriously, I take ridiculous amounts of ammo, cause I also take ridiculous numbers of guns and typically have at least one new shooter working out of my big wagon... overkill, what is that again?

Adios,

Around here we shoot between 6 and 8 stages per match. I follow the 10 and 10 rule per stage for pistol and rifle, then will maybe throw in an extra box of each. We sometimes have some stages really heavy on the shotgun, so I always take 2 or 3 boxes of shotgun.
That’s bad business! How long do you think I’d stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he’d pay me that much to stop robbing him, I’d stop robbing him.

I use the 10/10 per stage for pistol/rifle, and have my belt full for extras.  On the shotgun, I go for overkill.  At least three boxes.  We have some steel pipes that are must-go-downs.  The pipes and my shotgun just never seem to get along. :o ::) ;D

I normally would take 10 rifle/pistol and 4-6 shotgun rounds per stage, my rifle/pistol ammo is in 100 case guards and I take my shotgun ammo packed their boxes. I am off to the range this afternoon we will shoot 4 or 5 stages and I will take one case of each rifle/pistol ammo and a couple of boxes shotgun ammo.

The original question by Cyrille was what is the minimum amount.  All of our ammo is in either boxes of 100 or 50 though so we don't take any out we just round up and then if it's too close we throw in another box of 100 or 50.

With two people on the cart and ammo for two and guns for two we don't carry a bunch of extra.  I do usually have a couple of extra boxes of shotgun shells because I like my belt to be FULL even if there is only a two shotgun target stage.  There's one match around here that likes to put all knock downs up on a stage and you get to clean up with your shotgun.  I ran out of shotgun shells that day because my .45s weren't taking the targets down hitting dead center.  You had to hit the top.   :-\

Last Sunday my daughter and I shot our first club shoot at our home club. I had on the cart 300 rounds of rifle-pistol ammo and 3 boxes of shot shells. We only shot about a box each but we both like full belts, so that takes up another box. I had more in the truck in case of emergency.

Most of the local matches I attend we  shoot 8 stages per day of 10-10-X, with X ranging from 4 to 6 sometimes more shotgun.  That makes about 160 rounds of rifle and pistol and a couple of boxes of shotguns shells all times two since there are two of us shooting.  I then throw in about double that number for backup or whatever reason (loan to a pard, whatever-I was a Boy Scout).  Now add to that the amount of ammo needed for the long range event before the 8 stage match of say 30 rounds or a few more and you have a heavy ammo box.  I also carry some special loads for specical circumstances (i.e. some 9 shot for flying chrarcoals). As a result we carry about 750-800 rounds and hope to bring back about half that.

I try to bring at least twice as much as i needso that i can "repay" for the times when I was the one who forgot ammo (usually shotgun shells)or gabbed the wrong rifle or pistols. The first match I shot Ihad showed up to wach and help if needed, RED LOGAN let me shoot his guns and ammo at that match and I will be forever greatful to him for that and I hope someday i will be able to do the same for someone else

Ammo minimums in our gunwagon?  (local 6-stage matches)
1 shooter----200+ six-gun/rifle & 2 boxes shotgun
2 shooter----400+ six-gun/rifle & 4 boxes shotgun
3 shooter----600+ six-gun/rifle & 6 boxes shotgun

That way ya got some extrys for shoot offs & after-match practice, if any is allowed.
Also if anyone forgot, you can assist.

Well I use the 10/10/6 rule per stage and for monthly matches usually carry around twice the required ammo in case a new shooter needs it.  For big matches I have started carring around a thousand rounds for a week or two.  That way I have plenty.  I think when I left home in Feb for winter range I took around 900 rounds with me and barely had enough to shoot Rio Salodo on Friday and the main match and some warm up/ practice stages every day prior to my wave on two days and a little ammo fo rops checking work that was done.  If the rain would have stayed away on Saturday I would not broughthome a loaded round and would have probably bought a coupple of boxes, as it was I didn't shoot team, Posse, or top gun and only a couple of side matches and I think I brought home 20 loaded rounds.  I like to have a loading strip for a reshoot and the right ammount fo rthe stages for the day in my cart and all the rest in the vehicle or camper.  You can never have too much ammo but you can run short very easy.  I figure that I shot around 1000 rounds a month between matches and practices on average.  My goal is to have 12k or more of brass so that during the holidays I can reload for the year and will not have to reload every month.  That way I order the powder, primer, and bullets in bulk.  I will get the best prices on bulk compoanants and save some money.  Right now I keep trying to build up a reserve but something is always out because of the supply train around here.  If it is not wads for the shot shells it is large pistol primers or shot or 209 primers.  About the only thing that doesn't run short around here is powder.  I can get Trailboss and Clays real easy I might hav eto wait a week or pick it up when I'm in ABQ but they are never out.  But prime is very much a hit or miss in ABQ where they are cheap but the local gun store keeps them in stock for about $2 more a 1k, Bullets since I have started using Co Cast bullets from San Juan they are at the end of the phone conection .  Call up and order and either have them shipped or pick them up at a big shoot.  The only thing that is really difficult to get is the Rem Wads and shot for a decent price.  Ihave started using the grey AA hull as abck up.  But shot can be hard to get since none of the stores in town carry it, and Sportsman wharehouse has been low (1 or 23 bags) or out the last several times that I go and I usually have to spilt the bags with a friend.

Howdy!
Used to bring more; but after doing this for about 10 years, just bring what's needed.  For our typical matches of 6 stages:
130-150 pistol
150 rifle
around 40 shotgun
I don't bring extra ammo (or guns) for other posse members; either they don't shoot my caliber, my powder or my strength of ammo.
I load my gunbelt from what I bring that day.  If pistol and rifle are different calibers, I load the belt with around 20+ rounds of pistol and have a small pouch on the belt with about 10 rifle rounds.  Towards the end of the match, I start to load off the belt.

I do the same thing sometimes, and I probably owe folks more than a stage or two worth of ammo.  I usually make sure I have two boxes of .45, one box of .44 and a full box of shotgun to add to whatever is leftove from the last match.  Sometimes it works out, sometimes not.... ::)
Of all the things I've lost over the years, it's my mind that I miss the most!
