Gun Cart Axle
« on: February 17, 2006, 11:21:39 AM »
I'm trying to build a gun cart but I'm having a problem finding an axle assembly for the wheels. Anyone know where to look?

Home Depot, Lowes, Green Thumb.  Almost anywhere that carries steel.  Mild steel is fine for cart axles.

Yep got some at the local hardware $4. If you got a friend that is a electrican you might snag a piece of Ground rod from his truck, and some 1/2"pvc conduit. It makes great spacers instead of 50 washers. Dill a hole each end place a cotter key or a snap key and yer set.

I used a piece of 1/2 threadered rod and emt conduit for the spacers. used casle nuts to hold it together and then some brass curtain rod ends made it look like a hub. I dont think they had gun carts then and unless you have wooden wheels you can only go so far .
Beside whatever you make will tote your guns and be an authentic creation by   YOU .
i SPRUNG FOR SOME WIRE WHEELS FROM TRACTOR SUPPLY ABOUT  $20.00 BUT IT ROLLS SMOOTH .
Since I am new I tried to figure out what distractions I could eliminate from my shooting . Because when its match time
I dont want to be counting bullets from a box , ( made 6 loading boards ) or trying to lug a sled around hard dirt.

Say you are standing at the hardware store and have found the perfect wheel.........

Then you take that perfect wheel over to the bar stock (if you don't know ask someone) and find the one that just fits through the wheel..........

Buy some washers, at least 4 that also just fit over the bar stock, and you will need 4 roll pins at least an inch long.

Put the axle on your cart.   Drill a hole, put in a roll pin, place washer, slide on wheel, place washer, drill hole, put in roll pin.....Do the same for the other side....

Your axle will never bend, break and the wheels will never fall off but can be removed by driving out the outer roll pins......

But that's just one way to do it.  I shy away from the easy "all thread" stock as it's inherently weaker than regular bar stock.
