Can you shoot a 45 Schofield in a 45 Colt? I believe you can, this being like the 38/357. I seem to remember reading this was why the 45 Schofield nerver was as successsfull as the Colt, you could fire S&W ammo in the colt but not vice versa.

Sure can.  That's what the army did when both guns were in service.  Saved with logistic  problems.  That is where the term "long Colt" came from.  The Shofield being the "short Colt"

yep, I've used the Schofields in an EAA Big Bore Bounty Hunter, an RV, and a Marlin CB. worked fine. They went trough the Marlin like #@%$ through a goose. Only problem I had was with the EAA, they have recesses for the case heads and the heads on the Schofields are a little bigger than the Colts. A shell holder for the 44-40/38-40 will work for the Schofield.....Buck 8) ;D
I might be slow, but I'm mostly accurate.....

SIR WILLIAM

It IS like 38/357 Magnum, length is the only great difference.

My Navy Arms Schofields shoot them both at the same point of aim at CAS distances. I like the Schofields better because they extract better with the larger rim.

Quick note here,

The original bore dimension for either of the .45 cartridges mentioned is .454 and they changed that when the .45acp was developed to .451.  Can't remember the date, can you?

So what I'm getting at is if you have a period piece and you shoot modern ammo through it, providing it's strong enough to hold the smokeless powder charge, it's not going to be as accurate because the projectile is too small.

And if you ever come across original ammo, or ammo re-manufactured, or reloaded for the original, it's not safe to shoot in the smaller bore.

But I bet you already knew that..............
