Boxes for the 76 cartridges
« on: July 09, 2014, 08:12:57 PM »
Greetings All,
It seems my adventures with the 1876 come in either feast or famine.  After getting to the range this past weekend after a long hiatus, I was re-thinking a topic that has been going on with these rifles from the introduction of the replicas – boxes for the cartridges.  I know, there are the plastic flip lid things and I have several variations for other rifles, but they seem very much out of place with the 76.  Add the fact that one cartridge for the 76 is .50 cal and another is based on a .50 cal necked to .45, but in short overall length, the choices of even plastic boxes is limited to one, maybe two.  Faced with no other options, I set out to make my own.  Well they work but they won’t win any contests.  In fact I came back to this because some are already starting to need attention.  About this time I happened to be looking over on Captech  Jamison website and noticed they now offer loaded ammunition, for the 76 cartridges no less.  Ok, what does this have to do with the boxes for reloaded cartridges?  Figured if they have boxes they had to get them from somewhere, so a quick email revealed the good Jamison folks would sell the boxes to me directly.  Now they are plain, no labels of any kind as the labels are only applied to the factory loaded ammunition boxes.  Fair enough, this gives an even better solution – a plain box that fits and you can apply any decoration or label you want.  $10 and some odd cents got 5 boxes, including shipping.  This was Monday and they got here today – 3 days later.  Now that is service!  The boxes come as flat, ready to fold so they ship in flat envelope.  The boxes are not the same type as the old originals where they are a top and bottom.  You can see from the pics below they are a box with inner tray.  The .45-75 cartridges fit perfect and the tray has a second level with holes that serves to stabilize them when they are inserted.  Now folks, I still wish for replica boxes like the originals, but this is a very nice box option for storing the cartridges.  The folks at Jamison do not advertise the boxes as a separate item to purchase, like I said I emailed to find out if they would and then called to place the order when the reply they would came in.  Will they sell to others?  I can’t say, but if you need boxes for your 76 cartridges it might be worth a call.  Who knows, if enough folks are interested maybe they will add these as an item in their site.  Hope this helps some folks.
PB
