Weld or braze mag handle
« on: January 25, 2013, 01:52:36 PM »
There has been a small crack starting in my magazine follower tab/handle. It final gave and broke. My buddy with a small stick welder told me that the steel is so old and soft that the welder would blow holes in it and further damage it. Any suggestions on a repair methods would be appreciated. Also this is my first post, and hello to all you Spencer heads!  Click below to see the broken part

stick welding would definitely burn thru.
If there is a small welding shop nearby I would have it Tig welded. A good tig welder will weld that up with no problem.
Then it would be all steel with no brass colored braze.  It could also be blued after welding.

That old steel gas welds beautifully, just use a small enough tip. I wouldn't braze it. S&S, Lodgewood or Ed Kniesly will have a replacement. They aren't too expensive.

I'd look for a replacement before I'd try to fix that one.

An experienced TIG welder could fix it for $20. you would have to clean it up and surface treat if desired. How much is a replacement?
