Question on Primers

I'm loading for my 45 Colt. I shoot SASS matches, so need loads to be mild. Running low on standard primers and was thinking about using Large Pistol Mag Primers. Got plenty of them. Using Trail Boss Powder.
What's your thoughts on changing? Willl the Mag Primer cause me to have more recoil? Should I reduce the powder charge?

IF you go to Mag primers you ought to reduce the powder charge but still not go under the minimum listed. BTW, you don't HAVE to shoot popgun loads. I shoot Gunfighter. My load out of my guns is a 200 gr bullet at about 940 fps. It also happens to be my carry and hunting load.

In metallic cartridges I've always considered magnums just fine unless working with some radical extreme load.

 Magnums in fact allow lighter loads to work better.  I have been able to drop my favorite plinker Unique 44 magnum load by about 10% below what standard primers will allow before I get into an "erratic ignition" issue.

It has gotten to the point where I mail order primers in bulk to save money, and in pistol primers, Magnum is all I buy.

Magnum Primers work by putting more flame into the case igniting more powder at the first start of the burn.
Any time you make a change to a component in your recipe you ought to reduce the powder charge.
I didn't make that up, it's in every reloading book, manual and pamphlet I've ever read about reloading.

Using Magnum large pistol primers to ignite TrailBoss is a little like using gasoline instead of charcoal lighter to start you briquet's. Too much 'whoosh' for the job needed. Every loading manuel, magazine article, book, and personal direction I've every read or heard since starting to reload back in '76 stressed Mag primers to be used only for 'slow burning powders'. As Shotgun F stated, in his previous post, they "put more flame into the case". You don't need that with TrailBoss. It is rated a FAST burning powder and is ignited faster and burns faster. Using the Magnum primer will cause more pressure and spikes for the desired fps and pressure in the 45 Colt load you want for your SASS match. I've yet to see a TrailBoss load listed using Magnum primers. Check the manuels, saying this only for your and others safety and the gun you shoot with. If you have no use for the mag primers, try trading them for some standard ones with someone that needs them or just 'bite the bullet' and buy some standard ones.

Kind of amazing, we spend a lot of money on reloading manuals, many of us have several, yet a lot of us really do not want to believe the information and recommendations in the very books we bought.  We over load, under load, replace standard with magnum primers etc.  Why the heck do we buy the manuals, if we are hell bent on doing what ever we want to anyway?

It's also odd that people sometimes post a question then say later that they're going to do it the way they planned anyway. I guess they hope someone will agree with'm?
